Help! Transition from LTC to Hospital

Published

Specializes in ICU.

I graduated from nursing school in May 2008 and have worked in long term care since. I am anxious to work in a hospital setting and after looking for many months just been granted an interview. Can someone please suggest or help me with questions that are normally asked during interviews? Knowing someone at the LTC, I did not have to go through a normal stressful interview so I have no experience in answering questions or any idea as to what kind of questions are asked. Are interview questions just general or are they clinical questions pertaining to where you will work or is it both? What is it like to work on a telemetry floor in a hospital? What are some of the differences working in a LTC vs a hospital? Thanks in advance for all your help

I didn't get asked a lot of questions..but some that I remember:

1. What do you like in a nurse manager, what don't you like.

2. What are your strengths.

3. What are your weaknesses.

4. On a scale from 1-10, how do you feel your attendence was.

5. What kind of tasks do you perform at your current job.

6. Why are you leaving your current job.

7. When can you start.

I just started in acute as a RN after working as a LPN in LTC for over 5 years. I was given training in phlebotomy, telemetry and IV insertion. You learn a lot in long term care, so you have a good base to start with.

Let us know how it goes. :)

For your interview here are a few things that will help.

1. The patient comes first and the families. Strive for customer service.

2. You are the advocate for that patient and will do what needs to be done to provide quality care.

3. Safety another big one. From medications, to falls.

4. Education for the patient and families.

5. Flexible. Able to multi-task start with 5 patients, take an admission, give up a patient, etc. etc. Very important.

6. Team player, will answer someone elses lights even if not your patient, Will ask your co-workers what you can do for them to help.

7. Please the doctors.

8. Stress your willingness to learn!!

Good luck, and don't forget to breathe!!
