Help

Hi

I am in a nurse refresher course for LPN, I have 2 questions in my course that are stumping me and I am looking for some help! The first one is how do the ABC's apply to a newborn and the second is needing nursing implications for each letter of BUBBLEHE in postpartum assessments.

I understand what BUBBLEHE is, I am just not sure what the nursing implications are. I also believe ABC's stand for Airway, Breathing, Circulation but have not found anything to back those things up. I would appreciate any ideas on how to answer these questions. Thanks

OK I'm not a nurse yet but I do know that ABC's is airway, breathing, circulation now in a newborn heart rate 100-180, respiratory rate

Category 0 1 2

Heart rate(bpm) Absent 100

Respirations Absent Slow, irregular Good,crying

Muscle tone Limp Some flexion Active motion

Reflex irritability No response Grimace Cough, sneeze, cry

(catheter in nares, tactile stimulation)

Color Blue or pale Pink body with Completely pink

blue extremities

Vital signs first 12 hours of life

Heart rate (awake): 100-`80 bpm

Systolic blood pressure: 39-59 mm Hg

Respiratory rate: 30-60 breaths/min

Diastolic blood pressure: 16-36 mm Hg

inital assessment and stabilization of newborn

always needed by newborn: assess baby's response to birth

keep baby warm, position, clear airway, stimulate to breathe by drying, and give oxygen (as necesssary)

needed less frequently: estabilsh effective ventilation, bag and mask, endotracheal intubation, provide chest compressions

rarely needed by newborns: administer medications this is a guide on how the ABC's would work on a newborn. I got this out of Mosby's Nursing PDQ I hope this help you out. Sorry so long but I had to find the info to back what I put in first.
