Nurses General Nursing

Published

Hi everyone!

I am a new user, and wanted, first to say HI!!

Secondly, I wanted to share a disheartening experience. Last week, I was getting my vaccinations done so that I can start my clinicals, which start next week!!! I can't wait, and I am so excited to start my path to becoming an RN. Anyway, I was in the office getting the shots, and I got a little nervous, as it has been a while since I have had any kind of injection. the MMR killed, and I kinda said "ouch" or something. I also got a little sweaty and weak. The nurse was so mean to me! She said "YOUR going into nursing!!! I hope that you're going into research." I couldn't believe it! I have been working so hard in my classes and putting my whole being into becoming an RN and this witch just says something like that! So I started to cry, and the she started lecturing me as to why, I guess because I was crying, that I would be too sensitive to be a nurse! I was so discouraged! I feel better, now, but I just couldn't believe her attitude. (I had also had a terrible day that day, so it didn't help!)

Am I crazy to think that I can really do it???

Pooey on her!

Hi Heather, I'm Heather! (hehe! cheesy I know). Welcome to the boards! I hope we get to see alot of you around here!

Instead of letting nurses like this turn you away from nursing, let them be your inspiration to make a better nurse ;)

Again, welcome!

Heather (but you knew that already!)

Welcome, don't let others imtimidate you. You are a strong person with a goal, that I am sure you will reach. Everyone has things they don't like. i wonder what her fears are????? :chair:

Just shows to go ya....some people aren't sensitive ENOUGH to be nurses!

Can't believe she said that to you! We're not Rambo, we're nurses (OK, some of you out there may be Rambo nurses, but it's not a requirement).

Not only that, but she dinged research too!

And just to put in my plug...research patients need a lot of sensitivity on the part of the nurse. For one thing, it's scary to think you are a "guinea pig" which is the perception most people have -- and to be fair, some research groups are more interested in the outcome than the patient, but for most the safety and well-being of the patient is first). We have a lot of folks participate who just can't afford any other kind of regular health care.

PS Talk about chicken nurses. There is a reason I resisted nursing school for more than 20 years and it had a lot to do with vomiting every time I smelled something mildly yucky and feeling faint at the sight of blood (having children and pets to care for cured me of that pretty quick!).
