Help! Starting Ivy Tech in August '09

U.S.A. Indiana

Published

First off I want to say I am SO glad I found this site, it has been really helpful! I just have a few more questions.

I will be starting Ivy Tech in August and am taking most classes online (MAT050, IVYT105, SOCI164, PSCY101) and I am also taking ENGL111 at the Lawrence campus. Since I have to take MAT050 I am unable to take ANP101 until Spring '10 and then ANP102 in Summer '10. Does this mean I will need to wait until Spring '11 to apply for the nursing program? I have read in some of the threads there has to be a semester in between...

I am sorry if this seems silly...but I am so confused on what courses I should take first and how I should align my schedule as to not become overloaded and end up getting lower grades!

I just want to do really well and hopefully get accepted into the program when the time comes. I am a single mother of (soon to be) two children and I really want them to see me do well:)

Sooo any advice on what classes to take or on campus vs online information would be a HUGE help.

Thanks!

Welcome Emmi7! Congrats on your new baby that will be born soon. You will be a very busy lady!

If you will be taking ANP 102 in summer of 2010, then you will be able to apply by Sept. 1 of 2010, for a nursing school start date of Jan. 2011. Most people attempt to get all the pre- and co-reqs done before nursing school starts, but of course not everyone is able to do that. But, the more you can get done before, the better. Have you been to an info session yet? That will answer a ton of questions for you. You'll have three full semesters and one summer semester to get classes done so that is good. Next spring term (2010) you can take ANP 101 and other non-science classes. Most people would advise you to only take the 'easier' classes along with ANP 101 since you really need to get an A in it for points purposes. My advice for next summer is that you take only ANP 102 if possible, as your only summer class. Some people do take more than one class in the summer, but I think that since it is imperative that you get an A in that class for points purposes, the best idea is to take just that class in the summer since it is a half-term condensed class.

Of course that is all just my opinion LOL. . . you should definitely talk with an advisor and preferably a nursing advisor to really help you plan things out. I'm not sure if they do it during the summer or not (you could call and ask), but during the fall and spring terms for sure the nursing chairs have 'open office' hours on Mondays from 1-3 I think where you can go in without an appt. and just talk with them about scheduling, show any transcripts if you have them, etc. Good luck!

Thanks so much "csab" I just left Ivy Tech and changed my schedule a little bit...

I am taking the MAT050 class the 1st 8 weeks of Fall semester and will take APHY101 the 2nd 8 weeks of Fall semester. Then I will take APHY102 in Spring '10 and will be done with the required pre-reqs!!!! This way I should be able to apply for Fall '10...I hope!

You probably need to check and make sure that they offer ANP 101 during the 2nd 8 wks of the semester. Usually they do 101 the first 8 wks and 102 the second 8 wks. It might have changed though. But check to be sure.

Yeah I found one that is being offered online through the Gary campus, so I am in luck! I think I might drop the Multicultural Studies this semester though and take that later.

Have you finished all your pre-reqs yet? Or are you already in the Nursing program? I am getting so excited...I'm one of those weird people that just love school though:) Plus I am getting laid off August 14th so I will be able to make good use of my "unplanned vacation"

I am taking 102 right now online for the summer, then my pre-reqs will be done. In the fall I have three co-reqs to take and then I will be done and will hopefully start nursing school in January. Stinks that you are getting laid off, but yes, school is a worthy thing to do with the time!
