help with a few questions for med surg?? I have completed it, just need checking!

Published

I had questions that I have looked up the answer too. Problem is, I am always doubtful or always narrow it down to two and then am forced to choose. Please help me out and tell me if you think they are right or wrong! Any help would be great. These are just the ones I had trouble with

1) A patient with a fractured radium asks when the cast can be removed. The cast can be removed only after the bone

a. is strong enough to stand mild stress.

b. union is complete on the x-ray.

c. fragments are fully fused.

d. dealing has started.

-I said B

2) When assessing for an extracapsular fracture of the femur, what does the nurse expect to find?

a. weak, nonpapable pulses

b. brusing

c. outward pointing of toes

d. numbness

-I said B? wasn't too sure about this one at all!

3)A patient is doing all of the following after having a hip-replacement surgery. Which action requires that the nurse intervene immediately?

a. The pt sits straight up on the edge of the bed.

b. The pt leans over

c. The pt bends over the sink (ie brushing teeth)

d. The patient uses crutches with a swing-to gait.

- I said A

Sorry, I don't know the answer to the first two, but for the hip replacement question (#3), my answer would be B. Leaning over. No bending to less than 90 degrees after a hip replacement....

I have 4 years of orthopedic experience, surgery though. The first should be right. My daughter broke her radial bone and kept it on till x-rays showed good bone growth. On #2 I would also go with B. On #3 I would say it is D. A fracture hip repair pt can sit at an 90 deg angle, but no more. Just like proper posture in a chair. We have never had a hip repair use crutches, always a walker. Hope this helps.

an extracapsular fracture of the femur is a hip fracture. in assessing for hip fractures compare the two extremities. the fractured side will be shorter, rotated externally and abducted.

http://www.surgeryencyclopedia.com/fi-la/hip-replacement.html - "the three major rules for avoiding dislocation are: do not cross the legs when lying, sitting, or standing; never lean forward past a 90-degree angle at the waist; do not roll the legs inward toward each other--keep the feet pointed forward or turned slightly outward."

I guess I was wrong on some of those. On #3 I was thinking how I bend to brush my teeth, it is not more than 90 degrees.
