What can they do to a person's bank account?

They can go into your account and remove money they have deposited. I hate travel companies.

Just a suggestion for future reference (if I'm understanding everything correctly) is that instead of emptying out your banking acccount, instead set up a 2nd account which can be used specifically for depositing your travel assignment income, then after each paycheck, transfer the check to your main account.

Many travelers do that. It sometimes works depending on how you have your accounts set up. For example, if they are two accounts within the same bank, or if there are fees to transfer to one bank from another, or how far you are from home. Any way you look at it, you have to protect your money from nursing companies.

I did not know they could remove money from your bank account. I am to start a travel contract job in one week. I already have it set up so that they deposit all money into my one and only account. How can I change that, fast?

Unfortunately, when you give them permission to deposit, you also give them permission to fix "errors" or whatever you want to call them, and these companies are VERY well know for going into your account and reversing deposits for hours you've already worked. After travelling for all of those years, I've heard many stories!

I guess if you wanted to set up another account just to receive direct deposit, you could do that, and change your info with your company. I would likely set up another account that they don't have access to, and leave the direct deposit as it is. Why give them info for two accounts, right? Also, some banks policy is that if you don't have enough $ in one account to cover a debit/bill, etc, they will pull from another of your accounts to cover it. I know Bank of America used to do this, and still might. It would scare me to essentially give them access to even more of my money. Also, if you want a direct deposit to stop, you normally need to present it in writing to the nursing company, and I used to send a letter to the bank as well.

Be smart and keep your money safe. Maybe nothing bad will ever happen. Or maybe one day you'll find yourself in a horrible contract, your license will be in jeopardy, you'll leave and that company will go after your money. Be careful.

Sorry for the long post, but I hate to see or hear of nurses getting ripped off.

I hope you found a good company. Good luck in your travels!

......that's what I did. But one still has to take it out of the first account to transfer it, hence the "emptying out."

Don't everyone jump to conclusins I have been traveling now for 18 months with three different companies and I know these companies do not try to screw you nd I have never heard of them taking money out of someone's account. I have on occasion heard of a nurse getting their contract cancelled by the hospital but that is even rare.

What state are you currently traveling in? You can get another assignment in less than a week if you need to with a number of companies.

I have travelled for years, and I am sorry, but you are incorrect. It has happened to me personally twice, and it has also happened to others I know, as well as others I've heard of. IMHO, blanket statements are unwise. Please all, be proactive and careful with your money.

Oh wow hellllo...I thought I had mentioned about the checking account just for your travel income in the thread you started...I certainly intended to :imbar My apologies.

If you are with a bank like Bank one or Bank of America, you should be able to set up more than one account with them. If you are, then set up a second account (checking or savings) and move all of your money into that account except leave a minimum amount in your "travel income" account that is required to keep the account open. At midnight o one when your check is directly deposited into your account, jump online and transfer it into your "travel company tamper proof" account. It takes very little time to set up new accounts--like moments.
