Help a nursing student

Hi,

I'm going into into my fourth and final semester and I start off with a OB rotation.I was wondering what are the popular meds you guys use on the L&D unit and postpartum unit...

Featured Replies

1. pitocin commonly referred to as "Pit" is used for labor induction and cervical ripening

2. methergine used for refractory postpartum uterine bleeding

3. carboprost used for same as above

4. RhoGAM used in cases where mother is Rh negative and baby is Rh positive, often this is given prior to birth visit if there is question about Rh of baby in a negative mother

5. brethine is used to prevent preterm labor

6. and AAAAhhh "yes" Stadol, Nubain, Demerol and various other medications for pain depending on clinical picture of patient............

Good Luck, have lots of fun and hope ya get to see some babies--------awesome experience!:p

I take OB next semester also.... I'll give you the meds that we are expected to know and learn, The meds we are expected to know are given either before, during or after birth Some are for the newborn. Please excuse me if I spell something wrong... They are below:

Before Birth

Motrin

Tylenol

oxycodone

Docuaste( Colace)

Glycerin with hazel topical patch

Hydrocortisone

Ferrous Sulfate

Ketorolac( Toradol)

Simethicone( Mylicon)

Ondansentron (zofran)

Benadryl

Rho (d) immune Globulin

Rubella Vaccine

Labor and Delivery

Dinoprostone ( Cervidil)

Mag. Sulfate

Oxytocin(pitocin)

Nalbuphine ( Nubain)

Fentanyl

Ephedine Sulfate

Methylergonovine maleate

Terbutaline Sulfate

Carboprost Tromethamine

Baby meds

Vitamin k

Erthromycin for eyes

Hep B vaccine

Hepatitis B immune

Hope this helps... All of us nursing students at my cc have to research each of these meds, in the form of a drug chart. So I'm getting a head start on it now. This also comes in handy when clinicals start, so that I won't waste my precious time looking up drugs. Good luck to you.
