Hello. Please give advice and suggestions on a fairly (1 1/2yr old) 42 bed behavioral unit that is unorganized, and has been with out a unit manager for sometime. The aids, and nurses dont get along, they dont feel they are working well together. There are NO activities or anything planned on the unit. Whats kinds of activities should there be?? schedule for the day ect!!!!

there have been no unit meetings or any real kind of report/updates for this unit. it is basically a adult unit.

would you all be kind enough to share what you all have experienced. are there any resources that i can reach out to to get info???

HELP

thanks

Quick reply:

I suggest a visit with successful nearby units. Administrative officials are usually happy to show off their units and discuss practicals points.

Adopt the 12 step Emotions Anonymous Program into your unit rules for both staff and patients.

thanks

This is how the cracks that patients fall into are made, a tragedy waiting to happen. Insist that your aides monitor the pts the way they are supposed to, and do NOT trust them to do so. Follow up behind them. Make your rounds frequently and make them at different times on no set schedule.

If you witness events or things that are not safe, correct it as best as you can and put it down on paper with dates and times, make a copy and give it to your supervisor personally.

Of course the primary problem needs to be fixed, but until then, you must protect your patients, yourself, and your license.

We have a very structured program, activity therapy, leisure group, circle group, nursing education and goal setting and reflection (setting in the am reflection in the pm) we also have personal time (adls, showers ect) visitation time, snacks, tv/nap/free time From 7 am to 8:30 pm every minute is on a schedule

As far as techs and nurses go, sounds like management needs to step in and take control, MHT's should have to answer to the charge nurse or team leader, if they are not doing thier jobs then they need to be written up, Patient care and safety should be everyone's main concern.

If your dept isn't doing groups but is billing patients insurance for group time, its fraud, and could result in some serious issues.

Sounds like a mess, good luck to you.
