Hey guys, I'm in need of ideas for a teaching project for my maternity/ Pediatric class... I have to come up with a topic and implement a teaching plan, preferably to school age kids...

What about hand washing? (even general hygiene like hand washing & tooth brushing, how keeping clean keeps the germs away). I know my son & his friends enjoyed seeing pictures of the bacteria and other microorganisms that live on your skin until you wash them away.
Basic nutrition went well with my son's cub scout group (especially since food tasting was a component).
My sister had done a program on autism awareness (with a lot of promotional materials from the state office on autism) during autism awareness month. Especially beneficial since the school had just developed a program for autistic students that were integrated with general education for lunch, art, gym, recess, etc.

Hand hygiene sounds good, did you have to do a project on the topic?
Not for nursing school yet, but I can for extra credit this semester.
In the past I've pulled up some cool photos of germs and made a Powerpoint with the photos & basic tenets of hand hygiene. I used to have a source for crystals that glow with a black light if you do not wash effectively. I also found soap in Target that played a 30 second song after you pressed the dispenser. Helped the kids to learn exactly how long you should scrub to be effective.
There are many graphics available online to illustrate the necessity of good hand hygiene from the CDC, local health departments, even some hospital public relations departments.
