Hello everyone, im an LPN
In Sept 2011 i signed up with Excelsior College through The College Network. I have since then regretted it. I feel like i will benefit more from a classroom setting. Not only that but my economic situation has become difficult and i cant keep up with the payments. Im a single parent. I have to pay a total of $7500 so they financed it for 5 yrs and every month they take money out of my account. I dont find their modules to be helpful. They give you a 3 day grace period to cancel, but that wasnt enough time to review their modules. Now i call them up to tell them to release me from my contract and they dont let me. They say the only way will be to either reffer 7 people to their program or to transfer the account to soneone else!!! I feel like a fool. Is there anything i can do? I have since talking to them changed my account number so they cant take money out, but i know its gonna ruin my credit. Please what can i do???????

You had your three days to cancel. Now you can pay as agreed or face the consequences. People have posted here and on other sites that TCN successfully sued them and won judgements. If that is the case, changing your bank account will be of no use. You can take your contract to an attorney for legal advice, but that will cost even more money and I expect you will be told basically the same thing.

You have three options:
Pay as agreed.
Comply with the offer of finding replacements or someone to accept transfer of your account.
Withdraw without their consent and await collection activity (which by the way may not make any future employment search go very well).
Absent proving you weren't in your right mind when signing the contract, and or proof that the college made mis-statements or otherwise induced you to sign fraudulently there is nothing left for it; you is a grown woman and entered into a vaild agreement.
Now being as all this may there are two suggestions: first contact one of those television news "Shame On You" reporters and tell them your sad tale of woe and misery. Though it's not outright fraud as is often up those person's street have seen such reporters do a story that *leans* on someone to do "the right thing". In each case I would have told both the reporter and the complainer *tough cheese*, but that's just me! *LOL*
You could see an attorney but legally the college is in the right and there isn't anything a lawyer can say or threaten to do; however perhaps he or she can make a *moral* case better than yourself (see above) and that may soften their hearts.
P.S.
You should find out if changing bank accounts isn't going to cause those payments to be returned as a bounced check. If so you're not only going to be hit with fees from the college but they could be racking up at your old bank as well. Legally you aren't supposed to write checks against a closed account nor continue to allow automated payments to continue. You're obliged to contact whomever and give them the new account information.
What do you mean when you say that by withdrawing without consent wont make any future job search go well? I changed my account number so they cant continue to take out payments, thats what my bank told me. I was only with them barely three months. Im not an evil person, i just made a horrible mistake, they say i can transfer my account to another person for any degree they have available.
If you withdraw without consent and continue refusing to pay the monies owed they very well may begin collection activity. This could range from anything up to and including a lawsuit. If you still refuse to pay it can result in a judgement against you. All of this will appear on your credit report which is something many employers like to see when considering potential applicants.
While some feel it should have no bearing, some employers see it differently and low credit score/serious adverse entries have been known to cause them to pass over that applicant in favour of someone else.
Just wanted to follow-up and say I'm *not* calling you a bad person. Far from it. You are just someone who got in over her head without thinking the thing through, it can happen to anyone.
When you get a chance search this site and the Internet regarding "The College Network", it seems others have had bad experiences as well.
