Okay, here is how i was taught to do priority questions:
An acute problem always beats a chronic problem.
Look at the s/s given in the question. If it is an EXPECTED problem with their dx, then they are not priority. AGE does not matter.
Example
a) 72 yo with COPD and CO2 of 50 (EXPECTED)
b) 5 yo with a fx of the left wrist and c/o pain of 6 out of 10(EXPECTED)
c) 39 yo with c/o chest pain and K+ level of 5.2 (NOT EXPECTED)
I have learned that an elevated K+ level usually takes priority in most cases because of the risk of heart damage.
Also, if you still can't pick the answer, look at the system involved:
1. Brain
2. Heart
3. Lungs
Kidneys and liver are obviously vital too, but ask yourself, "If I don't help this person now, what is the worst that could happen?" This should lead you to the answer.
GOOD LUCK!!!!!
I have a question also.
I am doing Study cases in Mosby's prioritization book.
Yes I am using exactly this book. http://search.barnesandnoble.com/booksearch/results.asp?WRD=Prioritization%2C+Delegation%2C+and+Assignment&z=y&cds2Pid=9481
It is asking to choose one answer several times.Example:
Which patient you would see first ?
1
2
3
4
And correct answer 4324312
So you need to come back to certain patients twice.
Is it the same in NCLEX or in real exam you just you choosing one(emergent) ???
Also in the same book needs to choose which patient you will see first second third and fourth.....again is it the same in NCLEX or you just choosing one.
I am taking 12th July just I am afraid to loose my consciousness and have a shock right after seeng this questions.
Thanks in advance.
Try using Prioritization, Delegation, Assignment by Mosby. Its all med-surg questions, and is really great! It helped me a lot, and I took my boards today!
Heres the link from Barnes and Noble, and it's relatively cheap.
Good Luck!

Review a prep book specific for the NCLEX that has practice tests. That should let you know what kind of questions to expect.
