Hello all, I recently got accepted into a Periop 101 program for February 2022. I wanted to prepare early and learn as much as I can before starting so I purchased the textbooks for the course, AORN Guidelines for Perioperative Practice and Alexander’s Care of the Patient in Surgery.
The AORN website only lists the name of the modules for Periop 101 and does not have information on the chapter readings for the textbooks that match up with the modules and I don’t have access to the course yet.
I was wondering if there’s anyone who currently has access to the course or has recently completed the online course who might have information on which chapters I should be reading for both texts for the modules. Also, would Periop 101 cover every topic on both texts or just certain chapters?
Edit: I'm new to allnurses and I can't find a way to delete a post but after some more snooping I found the document detailing reading and video resources for each Periop 101 module and attached the file here in case anyone else out there was wondering the same thing LOL

What is your background in relation to the OR? Because when I teach Periop101, my students have spent at least 2 weeks in the OR so that they have a frame of reference for what they are learning in the course. My personal opinion is that delving into the readings before you even start May only make you more confused and you won’t have anyone to help get un-confused.
I have had various shadowing experiences in the OR in both scrubbing and circulating roles. Although that’s not extensive, my mom is a CVOR nurse and has offered to guide me through content and answer any questions. Looking over the curriculum, I’m planning on at least going through the basics and learning more about sterile technique and patient positioning so I have a clearer idea of what to expect. I also plan on going over concepts that are not heavily tied to clinical experience and simulations like infection prevention, periop nursing diagnoses, professionalism, and wound healing.

I am going to DM you.
Hi K,
It won't let me respond to your DMs since I'm so new but thank you so much for reaching out and telling me more about your program. I was just thinking about about a book for surgical instruments so thank you for recommendation as well! Best of luck in your program!
Dear newornurse,
You’re very welcome. So far, I love it. It’s hybrid. Zoom lectures, 3 sim labs, and then 192 clinical hours. Do you have any specific questions about it? I’m so happy for you!! I truly hope you enjoy it! ?
I hope you get accepted into position soon after completing your program! ?
I uploaded a PDF of the Periop 101 course content that's current as of 08/25/2020. Does it still match up with the content you are going through in your AORN online course? Did you also purchase the recommended text Essentials of Perioperative Nursing by Spry or the ScrubDeck app? Which out of the 3 required texts in your course do you tend to focus more on or find more helpful with the AORN online course? Are there any specific modules that you find particularly challenging compared to others?

Yes, it still matches up. I did not purchase the additional text or the ScrubDeck app (it didn't get good reviews so I opted against it) I really like the Alexander's book, it is an excellent resource. The cine-med videos which are part of the online content are good too.
I am an RN from a completely different realm (Dentistry) so everything is different for me, but I wouldn't necessarily say difficult/challenging. I really enjoy learning so it is fun for me. Everything is pretty much common sense, it is just a TON of information. Instrumentation is hard because there is so much so I do recommend obtaining the surgical instrumentation book.
