there actually is an entry in my copy of taber's cyclopedic medical dictionary, 18th edition, for this:

lying-in -

1.

the puerperal state.

2.

being hospitalized for the purpose of childbearing.

it is also listed in my copy of webster's new world dictionary of the american language, college edition, the world publishing company, 1966:

lying-in

(li'in-in'),

n.

confinement in childbirth.

adj.

of or for childbirth: as, a

lying-in

hospital.

now, if you have a dictionary yourself, look up the definition of the word, clinic, and you will see that it is similar to a hospital.
