It has been awhile since I posted something like this....but, it is now time for me to do so again.
Like many, I stumbled upon allnurses.com several years ago....and I very much liked what I saw. Allnurses.com is a friendly site that encourages dialog, sharing, and learning amongst its members. Just like there are many paths into and out of Nursing, we too are diverse in our backgrounds and knowledge bases. Allnurses.com allows us to come together....to share and grow together. We come as a guest, ever respectful to each other and to the board.
If you are a current member and have shared, thank you for your thoughts and wisdom. If you are a lurker and have not joined yet, please make it a point soon to join. Again, it costs nothing to join....to join means to simply register so that you can provide a name for yourself if you choose to post later. And if you do post, post respectfully. You are amongst experts in his/her field and in his/her experience. So, present yourself worthy of respect in return. Tis not too much to ask.
From an American Indian perspective, we at alllnurses.com are but an international tribe of nurses who share a common purpose....to share wisdom and support to one another, to become better at what we do best....Nursing. So, keep the board and this NAI forum strong....bring your posts to the table, invite dialog, be respectful, share your wisdom. If you haven't joined yet and still lurk, become part of our tribe by registering. Together...we become stronger as members. Together...we become wiser as peoples.

Yes, I joined! I am still trying to figure out how to use the system so, if you get this twice, please forgive.
I am trying to find out who is the best person to contact regarding my volunteering on Pine Ridge. I am a nurse with 20 years experience inluding MCH, community health, expertise in all aspects of immunizations, and emergency room nursing experience. Can you guide me on this? Please answer, - even if its only to say that you don't know.
Thanks, - and thanks for the great postings on Native American issues.

hey, I just saw your inquiry about volunteering on Pine Ridge. I just gave someone else some info but not sure if it went through( Im new to this site also) anyway check out
www.friendsofpineridgereservation.org this also includes listings from Rosebud . they usually just ask for donations on the site but if you contact them about offering volunteer service, Im sure you will find something. There are womens shelters, alcohol and drug rehabs, childrens homes, and the need for educating these young girls regarding teen pregnancies, is the clincher. The problem is getting them together in a place that offers formalized support. Needs to be done in a traditional manor. well you get the drift. With a community health background (a big A + for reservation work) your service is greatly needed. and dont forget the Porcupine clinic . Its more Indian operated than IHS so you may be able to volunteer there . IHS is government,so they have their strict set of rules, which I never heard of volunteers there. Go Porcupine. Good luck and thanks for the concern.

I guess this is all that is needed to join the circle? I'm Prairie Band Potawatomie (still maintain family and tribal relations) but call my childhood home town Rosebud - lived in Pine Ridge, White Shield, Fort Thompson - Now in Phoenix working with and for Natives - Have been a nurse for over 20 years.

Hello,
I've followed the group, but just recently joined. I really have enjoyed this site. I hope it gives other people more knowledge about other cultures and respect for the American Indians.

hi! you should contact the don of pine ridge ihs; the main number is (605) 867-5131. they may be able to help any questions you have.
Teen pregnancy is the "norm" on the Rez. When I first worked there many years ago I was shocked but then finally understood I was placing my "norms" on a different culture and society. When my daughter was 19 and working at "Bats" she came home one day and said to me, "Mom, I am the only one who doesn't have a kid." Pine Ridge is a very harsh place to live but the Lakota people are very strong and face hardship each day and they are very family oriented.
