Help ! Interview ???

I am a fairly new grad 03/03. I have 13 years of Physical therapy experience

working in acute, outpatient, home health, medically fragile birth -21, group home, and nursing home work. I have worked 6 months of Rural nursing where you do everything, ER, Floor, surgery outpatient, OB etc, etc. Have been working since late August in a 278-bed hospital. I work , progressive,ER, and ICU. I do weekend special and drive about 1 hour and 15 minutes each direction. There has been an opening for School nurse position at our high school about 10 minutes from my home. It is a 10 month postion. I have two children ages 8 and 4 who will be in 3rd grade and Kindergarten next year in same school district as the HS position. Did have a rotation in school 4 weeks that I followed a HS nurse, and did enjoy it. I like Teaching!!! So my quesitons are can I do this? Should I do this, and What type of questions do I need to be asking at my interview? any heads up questions? Questions you wish you would have asked? I want the kind of things like I will remember to ask that at my next job!!! Thanks for any input. My interview is Fri march 19th!

Look inside your heart if you want to do this go for it. Just relax, dress nicely, have your resume prepared, be honest, be on time. After they get done with the interview if you have anything that is unclear to you, ask them about it. Good luck and hope you find what your looking for. If you do have the interview hope you get the job :)

I would want to be prepared for the questions they were going to ask me as well. Clearly the fact that you are a new grad didn't scare them off since they are interviewing you - congratulations on doing a great job selling yourself so far! :) I would ask how many schools you will be expected to cover, whether you would be supervising health care assistants, etc. All this should be covered in the initial discussion. They will likely ask what brings you to this particular field of nursing, how you feel about dealing with the parents, how your previous experience relates to the job in question. (Rural nursing is a great background - really prepares you for standing on your own - sink or swim and all that!)

Thanks for all the advice! My interview was @ 10:15 am on Fri.. I presented my self well answered all thier questiona dn even impressed them a bit I think. However my sister in law had called me after my interview and asked, How did it go? I said really well , but I really got the feeling they already had someone picked, they were just going throught the motions of doing interviews. She asked why I thought that, ( I am a pretty good judge of people and instincts-part of your 3rd sense of being a nurse I guess), anyway I said I just got that feeling. Well, I left my interview @ about 11am

Saturday in the mail @ 11:00am THE VERY NEXT DAY!!!! :angryfire I got the letter the school board was very impressed with your interview and application, however you did not get the job Bla Bla Bla....we encourage you to apply in the future BS. I thought that was extremely tacky of the school board to send the letter the next day, Like they had to have already had it typed up or something as fast as I got it. Anyway, their loss! They probably hired some 50 year old within the system who doesnt relate to teenagers :chuckle or want to implenment wellness programs in the school like I wanted to do-dueto the severe obesity problem in our community! But like one of my friends said. It may not work out, and they could always call you back. But thank you for your concern--Onto tommorow. :)

Lol - I'm 32 and I have trouble relating to the college students I serve ;).

Sorry about the job. I agree with Martha - no interview is wasted if it gives you practice. Keep on plugging away - the perfect job is out there!

I'm 52 and have been told by students and administrators during my 21 year career that I relate to kids very well. I have k-12 experience. And I would love to implement more wellness programs. Obesity interests me. I was wellness coordinator for the past 7 years in my district. So, age doesn't really have a thing to do with relating to kids. I do know from past experience that you are probably right about having someone picked out before. Many schools hire internally, but not necessarily nurses. The job has to be posted and they are required to conduct interviews for a certain number of hours before the posting is officiallly closed. But word has gotten out probably that the job was opening up and others may have beaten a path to your administrator's door. In my community a school nurse job is "to die for". Every nurse wants to be one-but must have the qualifications before even being considered. Sorry you missed out-try again. There will be other openings. Also, volunteeer to be a substitute in the clinic when the nurse is sick or uses her personal days. Volunteer to help with screening. It cant hurt, and may help you immensely. If you get to know the nurse, she may be able to put out a friendly word for you if another school in the district or in the neighboring districts opens up. She may even give you advance warning so you can get in there quickly.We school nurses meet and chat amoungst ourselves. People-(volunteers, parents, aides, nurse wanna bees and teachers) are all discussed. So are administrators and job situations. So get out there and be recognized as a poerson who would love to be a school nurse! Good luck!
