help! i currently live in the ft lauderdale area and am agressively trying to reregister my lpn license. i was originally licensed in new york and have not worked in the feild for several years. i have completed the req course for new york and am now waiting to hear back from them any suggestions on where to update my skills? i am also thinking of taking cna exam in florida. any thoughts or sugestions would be appeciated

I was an LPN from 1982 to 1996 and, in an act of stupidity, allowed my license to expire in 1999. Last fall I decided to re-enter the medical field. I began by "testing out" through the local community college to become a CNA. I passed the "testing out" which included written test and skills demonstration. I am now taking the RN/LPN Refresher Course at the community college. This course runs from late February to early June - 2 eve's a week for about 4 hrs each class. Some of the class is done online, some in class, some clinical. I am now working as a CNA in the long term care area. My love is direct patient care which is what I do as a CNA. The LPN's where I work only pass meds - nothing else - no patient care. This bums me out. Right now I am giving alot of thought as to what I'll be doing after I get my license reinstated. The hospitals around here have no interest in LPN's. They make it clear that they are interested in only RN's and maybe a few CNA's. Home health care is a good option for me whether it be as an LPN or a CNA. I know there is more money in being a LPN but for me the question to be answered is "What job will be more rewarding for me?" By the way, after I spent megabucks on new books for the refresher course I realized I could have bought my books through Amazon.com or eBay or wherever. By this time, it was too late to return my new books back to the college bookstore. Let me know if you have any other questions. Good luck!

thank you! you sound like. me actually it was fl bon that told me to challenge cna exam i believe i am going to i took an online exam and scored great not afraid of clinical part of exam it is all coming back to me any suggestions on what skills to brush up on for that? i sent my paperwork to ny and am waiting to here back from them also am taking online req courses for fl i also found patient care the best and most rewarding what community college are you going to i have not found a refresher course for lpns i appreciate any help or guidance you can give me

My daughter had taken the CNA course a year or so before I chose to re-enter the field. I borrowed her course books to study from. Check with your the dept of health and human services in your state about RN/LPN refresher courses. They would be able to list the schools/colleges who offer approved refresher courses. "Approved" is a key word here. If you take a refresher course not listed as approved you may not get your license reinstated. One of the biggest changes from when I was an LPN is in the area of restraints. We used to keep siderails up on beds and now we don't for the most part - can be viewed as a restraint - even for our dear elderlies who are at risk of falling. This was a major hurdle for me to get over.
