HELP!!! Feeling hopeless

Published

Nursing is all I ever wanted to do. I left home around the same time i started college to escape an abusive situation. My GPA is shot from the year of hell that ensued and now I have to fight my dependency status (I can't get financial aid because I don't live with my parents and cant get their info). I can't go to school this semester because i can't afford it now. All I want to do is bring my GPA up and get into the damn program and every step I take forward feels like three steps backwards.

Community college seems like its a trap. My 2 year school is looking more like a 5 yr school with all of their requirements and only one bad semester.

Does it take everyone this long? And is it really as hard to get in as people say it is?

Try not to get too discouraged. Have you tried going to the financial aid office and explaining that you are no longer in contact with your parents and that you are living on your own? I do know that there are ways to get around the dependent student status. There is a girl that graduated this year who was in the same situation and I really don't know what they did for her but she was able to get financial aid in the end.

In my state there are forms to fill out and it may take awhile but I would try to find out. You might also check into other schools. Schools are required to follow certain federal laws for financial aid, but there are exceptions just keep digging.

I got an appeal form and called my advisor so we could finish it several times and she never got back to me.

Have you applied for any scholarships? Do you have a job? There are companies that help employees with college costs. While it's not ideal, many people work their way through college successfully. You could also take one prerequisite at a time at your community college so it's more affordable, then when you turn 24 apply for federal financial aid for nursing school.

Thanks...while I'm unable to attend school I'm working on getting certified as a cna so I can gain some experience and some insight into this career field, though I could never imagine doing anything else. But thank you...I've had so many people tell me I should give up or that I'm not cut out for nursing (that would be my parents) and I refuse to believe it. It's nice to hear someone say "you can do it" :)

I think you can do it, but it may be a long hard road. As someone that has struggled and overcome barrier after barrier in life, I truly believe that people appreciate things more when they have to work for them. Just because accomplishing a goal will be difficult, does not mean it is not possible or worthwhile. In fact, I believe the more difficult the goal, the more significant the accomplishment when you finally achieve it. Hang in there.

Thank you virgo, you've had alot of good advice, and yeah I've thinking about taking one class at a time, but I would like to find a better alternative. I know theres a way.

When I was a CNA, I worked for a nursing home whose parent company would pay for NS if you would agree to work for them for two years when you got licensed. I didn't take advantage of that opportunity, as I knew I wanted to do acute care and not LTC, but had my circumstances been different, I might have bitten the bullet and done it. Just some food for thought....
