Hi,
I hope to get help with deciphering a term of my essay question. For some reason this term seems to be a problem 'Implications'.
My topic is about wound dressings and how it can be painful to patients. The question would also like me to address regarding the nursing management of wound dressings its implications for the management of the procedure.
I think all I need help with is what the heck is the word implications mean. If there is a better word to use that can help me set off in the right path of my essay, I would be very happy for any help.
Look forward to your reply
kind regards

If you could rewrite this part, I might be able to help.
I don't know if it's just me, but I don't understand what you are asking besides the definition of "implication" which generally means "involving," "affecting," or "associated with."

I agree that your wording leaves us a little in the air.
But here goes, you will need to explain to your patient that you will be doing wound care at a certain time. Know your patients prn meds. Offer a pain med about half an hour before the procedure and explain that it might take the edge of the suture removal, wound care whatever. A relaxed patient who knows what is ahead of them is a comfortable patient and yes this also true in geriatric wards. Everybody wants to know what is happening to them, why it is happening, etc. They don't need a blow by blow account but simple explanations help (patient education is covered here). You dont want to scare them by reacting to the state of the wound or drainage and if they want to know what colour the drainage is be honest.
Is this the kind of thing your going for. Just remember offer pain relief, inform and educate the patient. That way you've covered most of the things an instructor is looking for.
Don't know how to stretch it into a 1000 words or whatever, but hope its a starting block.
I am sorry, I didnt realise I left some info out. Okay well I will share the topic and see if its then ok.
Topic
Wound dressings can be very painful procedures for patients. There are some patients and nurses who believe that the patient needs to, or should be able to, tolerate the pain associated with dressing change. The alternative view is that, in a therapeutic relationship, the pain from the dressing change can and should be managed to promote trust and comfort for the patient and subsequently may promote shorter healing time.
Explore the thinking behind each perspective as it relates to patients and nursing management for painful wound dressings. You will need to address the implications of the management of the procedure, from each perspective, for both nurse and patient.
I hope this helps a bit further.

im-pli-ca-tion [ ìmpli káysh'n ]
noun
1. indirect suggestion: something that is implied as a natural consequence of something else
It is important to consider the wider implications of making such a decision
Here is the meaning of the word implications from the dictionary. I believe what you need to do is to explain from both aspects: pain tolerance vs therapeutic procedures. A patient may refuse any type of pain relieving medications due to his/her religion, or just a refusal to have any type of foreign substance in their body. There are many reasons why a patient may refuse medication and the outcome or behavior of the patient will subsequently be different than that of the patient who receives medication to decrease pain. Basically just do some research on the reasoning for patient/nurse pain tolerance vs med beliefs, the negative vs positive outcome, and as a nurse how each case should be handled. Oh and Good Luck with your paper
Appreciate your help
No problem. I hope it was what you needed. :)
