Help with a difficult Resident

Published

I am currently working at an ALF and as I see it , am having personality issues with one of the Residents. My record to date is perfect and I am extremely scared that she will blemish it. I have been there for four years without incident and I believe from input am truly liked by all except her. I realize you cannot please everyone. This resident is not confused at all but she is lying to other staff members about me. The biggest issue is when I work at night I am the only person in the building so there are no witnesses. She is not claiming that I am hurting her, but she has accused me of unplugging her phone or not answering her calls to the desk for help to bathroom. I have all ready spoke to the admin and made her aware of the personality issue. If anyone had a helpful hints to resolve the situation I really would appreciate it. As always I thankyou for your input.

I think your track record speaks for itself. Document carefully, esp. things like what time you took/offered to take pt. to bathroom, how many times she pressed the call button, the dialogue exchanged, etc. I'm glad you have told your supervisor, so at least can you can try to CYA.

On a different tract, can you ask the resident how she thinks you could provide better care for her? Maybe she needs to be heard out. Is there some common bond you can find to make the relationship therapeutic for her and tolerable for you?

What did your supervisors or administrators say when you told them?
