Help with different nursing roles across Europe

Published

Hi all,

Apologies if this isn't quite the right place for this, but I'm doing some research into the Nursing Associate role that is being taken up in the UK and wanted to know if there are any equivalent roles across Europe.

For those who don't know it's a role:

- Seen as a bridge between the more basic healthcare assistant role and the full registered nurse role.

- Is regulated

- Requires a foundation level degree and might be moving more towards an apprenticeship in the future.

If you know roles across Europe that are more of this middle ground between a healthcare assistant and registered nurse, I'd greatly appreciate further detail and links. EU figures suggest to me that the role might be the equivalent of some in Denmark, Slovenia, Romania and Finland in particular but I'm struggling to find much more detail especially trying to use Google translate!

Thanks in advance!

Hi Joe,

In Finland there are

- care assistants (hoiva-avustaja, apprenticeship, parts of practical nurse curriculum utilized, can continue to become a practical nurse)

- practical nurses (perushoitaja in the past, lähihoitaja nowadays, a 3-year vocational school degree)

- registered nurses (sairaanhoitaja, a 3.5-year university of applied sciences degree, can continue to complete Master's and Doctorate)

The National Supervisory Authority for Welfare and Health (Valvira in Finnish) lists registered nurses as licensed professions and practical nurses in a category of protected occupational titles at Professional practice rights - Valvira. If you scroll down on that page, you can find links to laws regulating healthcare professions in Finland.

I hope this helps!
