Help! Did anyone get into nursing schools with b or c's for bio classes?

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hi!

I still have 3 more semester until I can transfer from a local community college to a nursing program at either a cal state or community college. I go to Chaffey college in California and I'm currently scared about my anatomy class. I have a D. I think I am able to get a B by the end of the semester. I am just debating to see if I should drop it and retake it to get an A. My cumulative GPA is 3.77 and baccalaureate GPA is 3.57. Since I know some schools look for A's in sciences. But has anyone this year 2014 or last year 2013 got into a program with b or c's in any science classes? Does anyone here go to Cal State LA or Cal State San Bernardino? I want to see if it was hard to get in and what grades did you have back then for you entered to any cal state or community college programs in California. I am located in the Southern California. Please help me out!

thank you.

I can only retake 1 so I would have i believe 3 because one of them was an intermediate class so I don't think it counts. I'm not allowed to retake the rest because I have to have C- or lower to retake a class. Yeah, that's my plan to do much much better in all my classes and do everything that is required. Do you think I would still have a chance to get in though? Thank you for the advice!

I would try to figure out why I made Cs and evaluate my study skills. Then, I would try to retake as many as I possibly could and do extremely well in my prerequisite science courses. Good luck!!!

I really cannot answer whether or not you would have a chance of getting in. Really you would need to sit down with an advisor from the program you are interested in and ask them to be honest with you about your chances. Then I would ask them what steps I would need to take to make myself more competitive. I know personally where you're coming from as I am in a similar predicament. I did what I just mentioned above and my advisor told me that I needed to get 3 semesters worth of As and Bs to make myself more competitive. So that is what I am doing. The classes I am taking are not exactly all required prerequisites, but the grades will count anyway, if that makes sense. Maybe that could be an option for you?

Not too exactly sure how Chaffey scores you on your application, but Mt. SAC in Walnut, CA does a similar multi-criteria screening. If you haven't already, I would also consider applying there when you start your apps for nursing programs (in fact, you should be applying to all local nursing programs in your area). Mt. SAC's NP is based on a point system, where majority of your points came from your HESI score and your pre-requisite GPA (anat, physio, micro) followed by lesser points given for experience and overall GPA. In other words, if you score high on your HESI test and do decently well in your 3 pre-req classes, you have pretty high chances of getting in. I do not know how Mt. SAC picks their students, but I've heard several students that had scored in the 70's point range get into the program. My guess is that they probably pick the top students while allocating a few seats to lower scored students (just my speculation).
