Help! CUNY confusion - Need pre-requisites done...

Published

Since I have a Bachelors degree I can take an accelerated BSN nursing degree program, but I have to get about 6 or 7 pre-requisites done before, preferably at a New York City CUNY school.

The problem I'm having is that the CUNY websites are very confusing (at least to me!) and even calling the schools I have in mind like Hunter usually results in long hold times and lots of transferring around with no clear answers.

Has anyone dealt with the local CUNY schools and if so could you give me an idea of which ones would have the courses I need? Also are their any decent online options for these classes? The pre-requisites for most of the programs I'm applying to are:

nutrition

chemistry (with lab)

statistics

anatomy

physiology (I and II)

microbiology

developmental psychology.

Thank you in advance for any help you can offer!

I'm at BMCC CUNY and they have all those classes. Also, dev psych and stats are online, and there's a hybrid micro class. Your best bet with any CUNY establishment is to look online at the options, check the admission deadline date and go to the school.

Good luck.

Perhaps you'll have better answers if you ask this question over at the New York Nursing sub-forum: https://allnurses.com/new-york-nursing/. Maybe one of the mods can move your thread there for you.

Anyway, any of the CUNY schools should have those courses available for you to do. Usually anatomy and physiology will be offered as a combined Anatomy and Physiology I and II series. I personally did some of my prereqs at CUNY NYC College of Technology ("City Tech"), in downtown Brooklyn (they also have a nursing program, but it's an ADN, though they have RN to BSN as well). The great thing about City Tech is that they have a ton of sections for the science classes, so there generally isn't trouble registering. At the other schools, especially Hunter, you really have to register as soon as possible to be able to get a seat in the science classes. At City Tech I did Bio I and II, A&P I, Microbio, Gen Chem I and II. I finished A&P II, lifespan psych, nutrition, and stats at Nassau CC, and I'm now a nursing student at the College of New Rochelle (started last Fall).

So yeah, you should be able to get any of those courses at any of the CUNYs (Hunter, Lehman, City Tech, York, the community colleges, etc), but it's a matter of getting a seat in the courses (if you're curious, check out this link for the schedule of classes at the CUNYs. find the school you're interested in and see if they have open sections for the summer/fall). You could enroll as a non-degree student to take these courses (that's what I did), though I believe the tuition is higher for non-degree students compared to matriculated students (nothing crazy like private tuition though).

Hope that helps.

ThAnk you so much!
