ESSAY TOPIC - Focus on your goal of becoming a nurse and/or career in nursing.

A Privilege and an Honor

For as long as I can remember, I have always had a huge passion for helping others. Not only is this passion, the one that has brought me to become a nurse, it is also the one that defines who I am. When I think about pursuing a profession that allows me to touch the lives of others every day, I become overwhelmed with joy. To me, nursing is far more than a job or even a career. It's a privilege and an honor that I will bravely take on each day in hope for making a difference in someone's life.

When I decided I wanted to be a nurse, I knew I needed to do more than just care for patients medically. I was given an enormous gift for helping others and I wanted to put that gift into full use. With this being said, Pediatric Oncology is the field of nursing I have chosen to embark on in my journey as a nurse. This field is the one that has been tugging at my heart the strongest and it is also the one, my passion will contribute to the most. In this field, I know I will be doing more than just caring for my patients physically. I will also be caring for them mentally and emotionally. To care for someone as a whole and to not be only a nurse, but also a friend, is why I choose to be in this field.

While Pediatric Oncology may be an emotionally tough field for a nurse and at most times may be very sad, it is also the field I feel brings much joy. Despite the fact that my patients will be young children battling cancer, the smiles that they may give and the chance that they may have at becoming cancer free, dominates all the heartbreak that could come from this job. Every time I am given the privilege to care for these children, I will do my best to find the normal in a situation that is not so normal. As a nurse and a friend, I will commit myself to my patients and their families, until I can no longer do so.

To be in a profession that will allow me to touch the lives of others every day, is a privilege. Whether the help I provide is of great measure or remains unnoticed, it is the highest honor I wish to receive. The pride I hold in saying, I am going to be a nurse,” is immeasurable, and joy that caring for others would bring me, is unimaginable. I chose to be a nurse because I chose to make a difference.
