Help choosing LVN to RN school in CA

Published

Well, since this is my first post on the forum, I'd like to say hi to everybody. I'm currently a licensed LPN and I'm looking to advance to an RN school. However, my vocational school credits for my G.E. courses do not seem to transfer out to Mount Saint Marry's College or Community Colleges.

Question #1 - Besides Mount Saint Marry's College and Community Colleges, are there any Non-online LYN to RN bridge programs that are in or around the LA area?

Question #2 - What are my Online school options. I only know of Indiana State University...I called Excelsior, but they don't cover CA. Are there any other online LPN to RN bridge programs that I haven't heard of?

Question #3 - I'm leaning very strongly towards Indiana State University since it looks like they are turning up to be my only option. Is anybody on these forums currently enrolled in this program?

If So:

A. - Can I take more than 1 course at a time in phase 3?

B. - Are the classes hard? Are there are lot of homework assignments or is it more reading book reading

and then taking the exam type of study?

C. - Are the clinical locations easily accessible or far and few in between? Anything about the clinicals that

I should know about? How do you like or dislike them?

D. - The college network (Phase 1) said I have to take 2 more pre-requisite courses, are they legit, are

they fully accredited, does it really take 1 hour a day for 30 days or will it be shorter or longer

realistically, are there any hidden fees I should know about?

E. - If I decide to just retake the General Education courses all from the start from The College Network

and then try to transfer them to Mount Saint Marry's College or Community Colleges, will they be

accepted?

I know I've asked a bunch of questions, but if anybody here is able to even answer just one that would help me A LOT!!! :) Thank you and glad to be the new member to your community.

Shepherd University is located in Los Angeles. I enrolled LVN to RN Program and before enrolled the school, I spent several months to look for the LVN to RN program schools, but there are not many. I had several science/ge courses taken and those were transferred. Personally, i do not recommend indiana state university.

Hi~ I'm currently looking into LVN to RN program. Do you recomment Shepherd university??? I heard about that school but don't know anyone who actually goes there. And also.. I called Indiana State University and they said that I would need to find my own RN preceptor for clincal. Do you know how and where i need to find RN preceptor?

Thanks in advance!!!

Is Shepherd Univeristy LVN-RN program online or traditional? Also how long is the program from start to finish? When are applications accepted? Their website doesn't give much details.

LA County has a program... but you need to have your GEs from a university or community college. I know it sounds long... but in the long run it'll benefit you. Those online private schools' credits do not usually transfer out if you want to chase down a Master's. Something to think about. You wouldn't want to reach a milestone in ur career than realize that you can't go further because you cut corners back in ur LVN days... at least thats my logic for avoiding those types of programs.

Obtaining a RN degree from a private institution isn't exactly cutting corners. I believe that your nursing courses will transfer but if you get your gen ed from an insitution that isn't accredited through at least WASC then you will have ot take them over again. But then again that all depends on the institution that you're wishing to get a BSN or MSN for. There is nothing wrong with obtaining your degree from a private college as there are many out there. Good Luck to all
