Help! Can't afford NYU, so need to apply elsewhere.

Published

I was accepted to the NYU accelerated program and I went for one semester, finishing up all my prerequisites. I just can't pull it financially, I realized, especially with the summer semester (can't really get much in terms of financial aid). I need to transfer somewhere else, but where? Hunter has a few more prereqs and they can't even give me straight answers as to which ones I have to take (ie, NYU had micro, but without lab. Does that mean I need to retake?). SUNY Downstate has so many more prereqs that it will take me a lot of time and money just to do them.

How's Pace? It's not THAT much less money, but it's still something.

If you want to try for Downstate, see if you can CLEP some of the pre-reqs. They will accept CLEP for just about everything except the science pre-reqs. All you need to do is read a textbook or two and pay $65 for a test. If you pass it you get the credits, and I didn't find the tests particularly hard. The test is P-F so you don't have to aim for a particularly high score either.

I know you don't want to hear this..but BLESS you for being @ NYU. I feel like it's such a huge opp. You should try to get gov't assistance to help. Put up an ad for a room mate...get food stamps...apply for scholarships if possible. Heck, try to get a voucher to help with rent. Don't be shy..it's a huge accomplishment to have been accepted into NYU and I would hate to see you pass it by.

If you are determined to make the switch..there is Molloy, LIU, Adelphi, Empire State, etc. All of the nursing programs are still pretty expensive. I wish you luck in whatever you decide on.

There is Concordia in Westchester which has a 15-mobth program. still $$$$ but not as much as NYU.

You could try to get into Hunter but the thing is with their new ABSN , admission is based on how high you rank.

You could always try LIU, College of MT. St. Vincent.....but those are two year program.

Also..maybe you can look into switching to the nursing program that is not accelerated./
