Help brainstorming ideas for my grad entrance statement!

Published

I have on last thing to complete before my application can be processed for my NP program. I have to write a simple 500-700 work goal statement, which must answer a number of questions. Some of these questions will receive very personal answers, but I am sure they are looking for key things in some of the other questions. Any ideas in which direction I should go in answering the questions below?

  • Describe your understanding of the role of the MSN-prepared nurse.
  • Describe what academic strengths and weaknesses you bring to the program and explain how you plan to grow in these areas.

I am sure they are looking for key words, phrases in the first statement question

How do I go about saying I have weaknesses? There are ways to skirt around this I am sure.

The whole point of these goal statements is for the applicant to be honest and contemplate his/her reasons for their desire to go into the profession. No one else can really help you do that.

One pointer I would offer is that I have always found a weakness of mine that is real, but is something that most other people wouldn't think of as a weakness. I have used this is interviews over the years. Example: One of my weaknesses is that I suffer from chronic earliness, which means I always end up with some downtime when I arrive early for appointments, meetings, etc., but I've learned to cope with this by always having something with me to read or by using that time to return emails or phone calls.

As far as academic weaknesses, be real. They've seen your transcripts and THEY know what your academic weaknesses are. Own it and address exactly what you are doing about it NOW, and what you intend to do about it in the FUTURE.
