Help!! Any Advice appreciated!

Published

My grandfather is dying and his PCP refuses to get hospice involved. He is at home and suffering with so much pain. The Dr is a very young man and quite frankly I don't think he knows how to take care of a dying person. He gets so caught up in trying to "cure" him (when there is no cure) that he is refusing to help him die in comfort. Anyone know any way to get around this and get help from hospice?? Or if anyone knows of any other organization that could help? Thanks for any help or advice. I am making a trip up tomorrow to see him as I'm sure this will be the last time we get to visit with him. :saint:

Fire his doc pronto and get one who grasps the reality of the situation and will get this poor man hospice care! Do it now; you can't afford to wait and all involved will have a much easier time dealing with his death, most importantly the patient. Don't worry about hurting the doc's feelings or making him angry; just tell him you feel strongly that hospice support is needed at this time and you need to find a doctor who is open to that. That may bring him around but if it doesn't, tell him you appreciate the care he has given and respect his opinion and would like him to recommend a physician for you. You don't have to follow any suggestions he makes (the hospice agency is likely a better source for finding a doc) but it will leave your old doc with a good feeling about the whole thing. Good luck- my heart goes out to all of you.

That is so terrible. Not only would i get another doctor, but I would report this PCP to the board. Insurance is sometimes an issue. Iknow in my new insurance, you cannot see whomever you want and have to get clearance for any speicalty from your PCP. I think that is BS.
