Elvis had just been signed onto RCA from Sam Phillips' small Sun Recording studio in Memphis. The echo sound Sam Phillips pioneered was trying to be replicated by the RCA technicians and they had Elvis sing in a stairwell. Listening to both the Sun and RCA recordings, it is easy to hear Sam Phillips had the upper hand, and he did the echo effect with microphone placement and one second delay.  These were truly analog days and the use of tape recorders were just replacing the acetate wax cuttings.
