What is the health insurance like with most agencies? Will be ready to start traveling next year but need insurance for myself and husband. Do most agencies offer insurance and what is the average cost?

Yes, the agencies offer insurance. I just began my first assigment and my insurance is thru Cigna health, I pay about $20 per week for myself only for basic health, prescriptions, doc visit package. Also I get vision which is about $7week and dental is included in the mix. Life insurance is also offered but I opted not to get that. My health insurance began on my first day of work but unfortunately ends after my last day of work. yuck! Which means I either have to run out and work somewhere else to keep the insurance or get my own private insurance which is what I think I might do b/c I dont plan on working back to back to back that quickly. But the agencies do offer insurance for the whole famly also. There are many options.
But like I said, I just began and am still learning about this whole travel nursing thing so forgive me for not being able to give you more info.

I travel with my husband who works from home so we get insurance through my company. I think most agencies offer insurance. I pay 70.00/week for both of us. It is with Cigna Health as well. We have basic health, vision, and dental. When I am not on assignment, we opt to do COBRA for continual converage which cost us about 400.00/month last time I was not working...yikes!!

How long can you get the Cobra insurance if you want to take more than 1 month off? Is Cobra through the same company that you have with your agency?
Thanks

You can be on Cobra for 12 months. However, you have to maintain the same level of coverage that you had while on your job. Rodgang is right, it's around $400/per person via Cobra. But at least the deductible is all taken care of by your previous employer.
My husband is planning on doing consulting part time on line while we travel, so I need to cover both of us. I guess alot will depend on what happens with the US Health Bill.
Thanks for your input

Insurance obviously varies between companies, but you are usually covered with little or no charge. In my experience, it is $$ to add your spouse. My husband, too, is a consultant and travels with me. Sometimes, it has been cheaper for him to get his own insurance, rather than add him on mine. And, yes, COBRA is with your most recent insurance company.

IN my experience the insurance pretty much sucks. High copay, high deductible, high coinsurance, usually HMO. That's even if they offer major medical. And half the time its some weird company that no one accepts. Better off having your own.
