Health Insurance crap at new Job?

Published

OK, so I am one of the lucky nurses to have enough luck to get a job in California as a New Grad at St. Bernardine Medical Center. Good training program, good student tuition reimbursement, etc BUT then I look at the health care options. They were trying to sell me on the free HMO for me and my family....

In my experience HMO is good if you have nothing wrong with you, however, I have had really bad experiences because of my health problems. So I go to look at the PPO option and there ISN'T one!!!! All there is, is a POS, but all the research I've done is that it's still pretty much an HMO. Anyone have any insight as to this plan?

I'm honestly tempted to begin the search for a new job, it makes me feel really bad to do this as I have already committed to them as a New Grad. But, my family's health is my priority, I have a heart condition among other things from birth defects when I was born. As well my husband has psoriatic arthritis and is routinely seen by rheumatologist.

I just want to know if POS it's going to do my family and I justice, or should I really contemplate the seeking out new employment?

I already know from personal experience that the HMO is not a good option.

Thank you!

Awww! Thanks. Yes, urgent care.

I currently work at a "post accute" facility.

There was two in the interview. I feel it went well. They laughed after all the questions. I asked why. They said I was the only one to get all their questions right. There were a few other people there. Some were in scrubs for the interview!

So, $22hr is top? I have 3yrs as a LVN and on top of the 9 yrs as a CNA.

$50 to upgrade from a PPO to a HMO I assume?

Thanks for all the answers :D

yeah the 50 dollars to upgrade from HMO to POS (they dont have a PPO) hence the reason I started this forum originally.

I'm not sure about the starting salary for LVNs at all honestly. I know our techs in ICU after a few years are making 25 hr! And they train them there, worst yet, most of them screw around the whole shift and when you ask them to do anything they act like you're putting them out.

It makes me really angry cuz I know TONS of people who just want a job, they dont care how hard they have to work, and they've never made 25/hr in their life.

Private messege me and I will tell you. It's in San Bernardino (post accute facility). Remember, the mileage they pay and bonus makes up for up. Base is $21hr. No benefits. You can add them though. If you live less than 40 miles, they don't pay. Yes, they do map quest it. I did post above the break down.

With the urgent care, I like the idea of weekends off! :D Just not sure if it's worth the loss in pay? So, do you think they will pay at least $22hr? What are their pay raises like? The guy in the interview said they are good.

Again, thanks.

I see you edited your post or I misread it. lol. This is an add-on.

I think the younger crowd doesn't know how nice it is to get their license and be able to work. I started in billing, then worked my way up to CNA, then LVN. 12yrs in the making! So, I hear you loud and clear.

By the math, it sounds like a $1 a year raise are the norm?

I've only worked there four months so I don't know what the raises are like.... I think they're a percentage though, like 4%. I've heard that number a couple times.

I wasn't asking about the facility you're employed at for work, I was just surprised to hear of something paying that high for an LVN, but that makes more sense the way you described. And I keep forgetting that I haven't worked as an LVN in two years and I was making what came out to be 22/hr (and two months off a year!)

I never worked urgent care as an LVN honestly and I have no idea what they'll offer you. I'd hate to even guess a number and be dollars off.

Fair enough. Good place to work at? People tend to stick around?

Each department is different. But I have met many nurses there are various floors who've been there over 20 years. I know the Urgent Care is brand new. Did they mention it's in Fontana? I drove by the building one day, it's beautiful!

I looked it up online before the interview. They were impressed I knew about it and when it opened. I did some research before hand. I also drove by. It's very nice! I remember it being built.

I didn't get it =(. He called today. Told me he was really impressed with everything. I was pick #3. Pick #1 got it for ER experience. Pick #2 they wanted part time. I was pick #3 out of 40 people. He said only two people did he call and explain things too. Pick number #1 and me. Everyone got a quick call. He said he was just so impressed with me, he had to give me the respect and explain everything. He said if they get to hire two people for FT he will call me or if something comes up in the hospital he will call. This way I have someone to lean on in the beginning. He gave me his word. He said with someone there with experience in a faster pace he would feel better. Not lack of LVN experience, but ER "urgent care" experience. I thought post accute would be the same, but I guess not =( Maybe God was looking for me as the pay would have been a huge drop. Time will tell.
