Specialties School

Go to the public library. Seriously, almost all of them have good "My body is changing" type books. The bonus is it is in common language so the kids really get it. I'll never forget how confused I was in sex ed class when the teacher said "menses" smile.gif

H.i - I am a reletively new school nurse. The school I work at is K - 5 and next year 6th and 7th will be added. One of my duties is to teach health education classes to the students. This has been a new experience for me and I am finding it quite rewarding. However, I now have to focus on sex education and am not finding the resources I have found with the other subjects. Does anyone know of a good resource to help teach about changing bodies? Thanks!

Our school is currently working on a new sex ed program for kids in 5-8th grades. The new curriculum will be in next month and we will review it and vote whether to start it or not. I will keep you posted. Also, I would not necessarily recommend you use a program that uses "slang", this undermines the kids and misses the point... we need to educate them using the proper terms.

I have revised our growth and development curriculum for 4th, 5th, and 6th grade. There are many videos out there and one of my favorites is from National Geographic entitled, "Human Reproduction". There is an excellent web site that provides course content, teaching strategies, handouts, and evaluation methods:

This web site also provides many other good web sites. Let me know if you would like to review a copy of our 6th grade curriculum. We could share the good and eliminate the bad.

Do you have community clinics or teen clinics like planned parenthood in your area?

They have a wealth of information. It may need some adjustments based on the age group you are presenting it to. Planned Parenthood of Minnesota may have a web page.

Check it out. :)

For your own good information purchase-Our Body Ourselves. SEICUS and Planned Parenthood have a wealth of information geared at teens. Every menstruation product has an address to write or e-mail for menstruation information. I've got loads more if you want to e-mail me, I'll share, [email protected]
