Health Care cuts and the CNA

Nursing Students CNA/MA

I live in NY state, The new Governor announced all the state cuts he is going to impose to get state back to healthy financial state. Our facility had a meeting to tell us about the changes they may make. One was possibly no raise, 2nd was layoffs. I noticed that we have less supplies. Is anyone feeling any issues liek this in theior facility?

Are working at a state facility?

:yeah:No I work for Catholic Health Care, The Ltc I work at had a meeting with all staff and told us that we will likely not get a cost of living raise, last year we were given a 2% cost of living raise becuase of healthcare cuts. They also mentioned that there will be layoffs. I can't imagine what would happen if they laid anyone off as we are worked to the bone as it is.The reason why I am especially curious is because I was a mortgage banker for 26 yrs and changed my career 18 mos ago , I am now a CNA and I have my nursing school interview on Monday, at the same time A major lender has offered me a job. I have worked very hard at this career change I am not young, I am 58. I can't afford to turn down the banking job if nursing is on it's way out. I wanted to know if anyone else has had any notices from their employer.

I wish I had the kind of opportunity that you have. I love the kind of work I do as a CNA and there are certain emotional rewards that no other job offers.....however, I've totally changed my mind about continuing my own career in nursing (I'm 46) because of the sweeping health care cuts that are plaguing the nation. Nursing schools are greatly limiting how many students they can take because there aren't enough teachers due to lack of funding. Despite the shortage of nurses, unemployment in the nursing field is pretty bad in some areas. Right now I'm searching for jobs on the administrative side of healthcare because they often pay much better than CNA jobs and the working conditions are much more favorable. I really don't want to discourage you from your dream of being a nurse......I'm only saying do a whole lot of research and checking around about your prospects before you make a decision. Then if you decide to 'go with the money' don't feel guilty, I sure wouldn't. Personally, I love the healthcare field...I love the atmosphere of hospitals and healthcare facilities....but I do NOT like how budget cuts are making direct care even more stressful and not very promising as far as compensation.

I would look at how long its going to take for you to get into nursing school. Most schools I know have a year or longer waiting list. Whats the cost for your education? Will you have to take out student loans and do you want to be paying off those loans for the next 10+ years. How many years will you be in school? When do you plan on retiring? How much will you make in banking vs nursing? Jobs are super hard to come by for new nurses right now. Things hopefully start getting better but who knows when.

I think we are all feeling the financial crunch. I personally wouldn't go into the CNA field because the money is not good. I am a CNA now while I am in nursing school and we are cut down to a minimum on CNA. With only a couple working on a floor with 14 or more patients you work your butt off and dont get much in return for it. I feel as a nurse you can do more for people and you will still work hard but at least you can pay the mortgage. And you are never to old to start. In four years you can be four years older doing what you do now or you can be four years older and an RN.

Job growth projections for the nursing field are still good......it's still considered a 'hot' job which will always be in demand and is somewhat 'recession-proof'. The economy has created such an unfavorable environment for every single industry including healthcare and that's why we're feeling the pinch. New nurses coming out of school face a lot more competition for jobs.

i am starting nursing school in september 1 yr program at Veeb in uniondale will be an LPN. I am positive about it. The money is so much better. I was just hurt on the job, I broker my pinky working with a resident that has recently become aggressive. I find that at the nursing home I am in they don't care at all what happens to you. The resident who hurt me sent 4 cnas to emergency this week and admin did nothing about it. I am the 5th injury. Isn't this negligence? How can they jeopardize their employees health and get away with it workmans comp only pays 2/3 pay and no health care. I am financially screwed.
