Health Care Assistant

Hi All

I have recently taken up the role as a HCA with no health background, etc.

Can someone please explain how a 37.5hours per week shift pattern works with X days on and Y days off?

I was bogged out with information overload on my first day.

Also, any tips for a newbie within the above role?

Thanks

Happy23

There are some variences between hospitals and wards with regard to what times shifts start but

an early shift is usually 07.15 am - 3.15 pm

late shift is usually 1.15 pm - 9.15 pm

a night shift is 9.15 pm - 07.15 am

so just say for this week you were working monday - friday

monday early shift so 07.15 am - 3.15pm

tuesday late shift so 1.15 pm - 9.15 pm

wednesday late shift 1.15 pm - 9.15 pm

thursday early 07.15 am - 3.15 pm

friday late 1.15 pm - 9.15 pm

days off saturday and sunday

the following week might go like this

days off mon and tuesday

wednesday late shift

thursday early shift

friday early shift

saturday late shift

sunday late shift

monday early shift

tuesday late shift

day of wed thurs

friday late shift

saturday early

sunday early

and so on

^ Thanks for the response, we have 4 different times, "Early, Late, Night and Long day".

My question was a 37.5hours a week, how many shifts/days am I to work?

I'm on my first week and will be still learning the ropes next week shadowing fellow NA's. So, I will officially be on the 'rota' system on my 3rd week! eek.

Hi, we have the "Early/Late/Long Day/Night" system too. I choose to do Long days, so I work 3 days a week with 4 off. Those who do "shorts" get 5 days a week. Nights are normally 4 nights per week.

Thank you both, makes sense! x

Specializes in ICU.

My unit works the 'long day' system at present. We work 07.00 to 19.30 for 3 days a week, and once every four weeks we work an extra shift to make up the hours.

Happy, how are you doing? It's great to meet a fellow HCA on here. Take your induction time to ask as many questions as you can!
