heading to nursing school..

Published

Hi! I am new to allnurses. I am a mom of 3 and have about a year left before I am able to apply to my local nursing program. I have always had a love for nursing. I feel that along side with being a mother, Nursing is my life's purpose. I love helping people! I once was a CNA (not for long), took a break then about 2 years ago was asked to join on a in-home nursing team ( I do CNA type work, all of the cases are on hospice care) I stepped away from it recently to focus more on my schooling.

With this being said, I am discouraged about the reality of the nursing field (i.e not about to find a job due to being inexperienced ect..) I know I have a good 2-3 more years left and things can completely change within that time. I can not and will not turn back since I've been working so hard and am more then willing to take my chances because I know I will not be happy until I am doing something that I love. Any tips or sugguestions about moving on with my choice of going to school?

BTW, I would love to be in the L&D department. I was considering becoming a lactation consultant while doing my RN nursing program but I can't find any local colleges that provides the classes that are needed. Although, at this point if the job market is the same in a few years, I will take whatever I can get :-)

Being a mom, I am also considering volunteer work at our local Preg. Crisis Center. I think this is be a wonderful way to slowly get my foot in the door.

Congrats on being a year away from school and its great that you are so excited and passionate about nursing!! Your past experience as a CNA will definitely help you when you are finding a job. Also if you can have a part time job or summer externships as a CNA while you are in school that will really help, especially if you have that experience at a place you want to work. Don't give up hope! A lot of my classmates didn't land their jobs until the last couple weeks of school up until about 2 months post graduation. And many of the people in my class didn't move out of the area, but if you are willing to move you will have an even better chance of landing a job.

Good luck to you!!

Congratulations on your decision. I think the most important thing to remember is that your desire for this is strong or you would not be attempting it. Having 3 kids has to be quite a handful to go along with school. Your determination is admirable and I think that is an indicator of how well you will do in the field. Follow your dreams, if you do you will never have any regrets. Good luck to you in your endeavors. Be Blessed!!!:)

:yeah:

Yay you! I have similar experience and stepped away to have a batch of kids (4) and a whole different career! I finish my prereqs June 30 and have been accepted to a program that focuses on just nursing, all liberal arts classes must be finished prior. Taking those first steps of committing to my future as an RN and enrolling in night classes was so scary and so fun!!!

You can do it! You will do it! You will find job!

Things were bad for new grads when I went back to school, I was told that there was a nursing shortage and that by the time I graduated jobs would be flowing like milk and honey in the land of plenty so i didn't worry. Well, now I am licensed and there is little to absolutely no work for new grads where I live. And things don't look like they are going to get any better anytime soon, as new grads pile up like logs in a river, and the river is starting to get clogged up with logs and there's no one stopping the production of new logs. So, your taking your chances and making your bet. You might win, and you might lose. Good luck.
