Are the Military Bases Hiring LPN's

  1. I am from the mainland. I have never been to hawaii, but would consider moving if I had to.
Question....I know Hawaii has several military bases. Do they HIRE?
I know i need to check the gov. website for openings. But just wonder if you locals hear
from time to time if they actually hire .
    Again. LPN postions.
    Thanks so much.

Pat: E Komo Mai! To answer your question... I suggest you read allnuses.com posts, Hawai'i, from the last 12 months. Read about both experienced nurses AND new grads looking for work. Get a feel for the job market here. If you read 12 months of posts, you will probably have your answer. :typing -- Lisa ;-)

As in most places, the job market here is very tight right now. When I moved here years ago, I could pick and choose between facilities. The newspaper was full of ads for both RNs and LPNs. Now, there are very few jobs advertised. As far as military positions, I would imagine that it is the same. The cost of living has also increased dramatically since I have been here. I wouldn't advise anyone to move here now in this economic climate.

I am trying to be realistic, not pessimistic. I'd hate to give anyone an inaccurate picture of the job market here, and have them be disappointed if they cannot find a job. The cost of just moving here is expensive...and if you don't find a job, moving back would be equally expensive...

The bases in Hawaii are tight to hire too! But they hire LPN and RN if you have 1 year experience. The last LPN posting on USAjobs.gov was on Schofield base, but I think it was filled. You can try for Tripler Army Hospital, but it takes a long time for the application and hiring process. Are you in Hawaii now? Are you a military spouse?

Yes the bases do hire, i went and interviewed for 2 positions, the issue is the length of time it takes from applying to actually start working. i applied in February got an interview in April was told i got the position 6 weeks later and its now June and I havent gotten a start date yet.

Yes indeed the hiring process takes forever. I just found out that Tripler Army Medical Center hires new-grads. I applied for a nursing assistant position in March and got interviewed in June. They notice I was a RN and told me they had a new-grad RN program, so they interviewed me for both postions. 2 weeks later the SFC, Major and Assistant Charge Nurse offered me a job as a RN. They told me that the training will be 10 weeks like a Versant Nurse Residency Program. Like what mzlilly said it takes a long time on their part for the hiring process. I dont know when my start date will be. I am just waiting for them to call me back so I can start the long paper work process! In the mean-time I will be working as a call-in RN at Kaiser.

Did you only want to work on base? Look into Kaiser and other LTC too! They like to hire LPN in LTC rather than RN.

Hey Jen , I accepted an LPN position for the preventitive medicine unit but im still waiting to get an RN position i just went to another interview at Tripler but for another LPN position. Everytime I apply for an RN the resumix rejects my resume because I dont have RN experience. so my question is how can I get into that new grad program? any info would be great, Thanx
(I'm getting so desperate and frustrated)

Hi there MzLilly. I got really lucky at Tripler. I actually applied as a Nursing Assistant. I never worked as a LPN and in Hawaii RN cannot work as a LPN unless they have a LPN license, but they can work as a NA as long as they do not violate the scope of practice.

So the Ortho/Neuro/Vascular ward called me for a phone interview. They said they notice I was a RN. They told me that they had a new-grad program for their unit. They said if the position was not offered to anyone they could give it to me instead of a NA postion if they like me. So they interviewed me for the NA and RN position. I waited about 2 weeks after the interview and they offered me the job yesterday. Now all I have to do is do the paperwork. I am just waiting for them to call me back so I can get further instructions.

I guess I got lucky... I honestly thought I was not going to get it. I dont know what else to say about the job. You can call the recruiter to see which units offer the new-grad. I did not even know Tripler has a new-grad for civilians!

Hey Jenn, I got offered a position as an LPN for the ER at Tripler and had to restart the whole pre processing but things always happen for a reason and as I was waiting, patiently, I got a job as an RN for hospice. I'm so excited finally!!!!! I start this Monday. I'm so glad that we were finally able to get jobs during these tough times.

    patience is a virtue!!!

hey xj3nnerz, I was reading a message you posted about being a military spouse and it led me tho this posting about you getting this position in a new grad program at tripler, congrats! I am moving to oahu this fall to live with my boyfriend who's stationed at mcbh kaneohe bay. I have been looking into positions at tripler, I sent an email with my resume and cover letter and I have called but no word back yet. I have searched for contact info for HR and would definitely be willing to work as a nursing assistant or an RN but am having a hard time finding this information... any suggestions or help... at Tripler or any other oahu hospitals?
