Having trouble finding a job any ideas?

Published

I am a nurse and have 10 years of experience in several different areas of nursing. My favorite is Psych. I have 5 yrs of psych experience. I am having a hard time finding a job in my area. I never thought I would ever have trouble finding a job at nursing and its my def career choice since I was 8 years old. I am a very good nurse. In Feb of 09 I fell ill with aspiration pneumonia on 5 different occasions thru Aug 09 I was hospitalized on 5 different occassions and because I missed more than 12 calender days I was terminated. I admit I missed alot of days because in Oct of 08 my grandmother fell ill and was hospitalized for almost 2 weeks at which time she passed away, also I had jus came back from a vacation of a week which I put in for almost a year earlier. The problem is now I can't find a job because I am a no rehire from that hospital. Idk wat to do I am getting so frustrated and now thinking maybe I am not supposed to be a nurse and I dont want that bc I love it and I am good at it. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated

Sorry you're having trouble finding a job. I hate that the job market is so bad right now. I hope it will get better soon. Keep looking in your area of course but are there surrounding towns that you could commute an hour or so to if you absolutely had to until something opens up in your area? Some hospitals would let you work three 12s in a row and stay the night there or offer discounts on hotels nearby if you had a long commute. I knew a nurse who did that once. I would suggest only doing this until something opens up in your area. Would you be willing to move for a good job if you had to? How about a job that is not in nursing but is something temporary in your town just to bring in a little cash until you find a nursing job? Good luck in your search.

Have you considered agency nursing? You have several years' of experience so you'd be a good candidate. Plus, agency nurses are needed in a wide selection of specialities including psych.

I was assaulted on my job by a patient recently. I didn't want to report the incident but was advised to do so by my supervisor. I ended up losing my job over this incident and I'm now having trouble finding a new job. I worked for this company for 4 years, but I have 11 years of nursing experience in LTC, medical surgical and sub-acute care. I feel lost and hurt. Does anyone have any advise to help me with this situation.
