Any nurses that have had assignments in South Florida please respond with what agency has the most and best FL assignments, what kind of pay to expect and what to watch out for! All info is much appreciated, thanks!
I was a full time staff ICU nurse in central Florida for two years. Almost all of the hospitals are becoming for-profit, bare bones, and miserable. The economy there has taken a terrible hit, and morale is low in almost all of the hospitals. I have worked in four hospitals in central Florida, and almost everyone was miserable in every one. I heard over and over, "I'm only here because of my family," "I'm only here because I am upside down on my house after the bubble burst" It's pretty demoralizing.

As an update to my own thread, I started a travel assignment 6 weeks ago at Broward Health North in Fort Lauderdale. I am hired by the hospital directly bypassing all the sleazy agencies and am getting paid $36/hr plus differentials plus $1000 housing stipend, so net pay is in the mid $40s. I am on day shift on a trauma unit and get an average of 6 patients. It's hard work but for the money it is acceptable. The hospital is not the safest or the cleanest hospital but it's manageable. Overall I am satisfied and will extend for an other 12 weeks. Thanks everyone for your input!
Broward Health has a per diem position called the Sun Chaser and it's an equivalent of a travel position. I called up HR and they told me about this position and paired me up with a unit that fits my back ground. But if you are looking for a long term staff position, expect around $25-30/hr
Just curious are you still traveling? If so have you come across any other good hospitals in Florida? I just applied for my Florida license today (Currently in Alabama) and after reading all the negative comments I'm a little nervous about it. Do many hospitals offer the Sun Chaser position? Any tips?

Stay away from Plantation General Hospital in Ft. Lauderdale! I was a travel RN there for 5 months, and had the worst experience! I was constantly berated by doctors, sworn at, hung up on, treated like garbage! And the staff nurses were just as rude. I have worked in 5 hospitals in FL, and I will never go to South FL again. Clearwater is wonderful, I had an amazing assignment there at Morton Plant Hospital.
