hello all! I am getting ready to go take my nursing entrance exam tomorrow. I was originally supposed to take it thursday, but it got changed so now I have a few more days to worry :o) Anyways I have a question for you that were maybe say squeemish in the beginning? Im trying to figure out if Im normal and if I will be ok through school. Well, Im GONNA make it, I just wondered how hard its going to be :o) My dilema is this. For some reason, when anything has to be done to my family (mainly my kids, husband, and grandmother, and sisters) even though I love medical stuff, I get this really weird feeling like Im going to pass out almost. I DONT, but its a very weird sensation. It especially happened when my daughter, who was 12 at the time, had a large hairy nevus removed from her arm that required an extensive skin graft taken from her leg. So they bring her out of surgery. Everything is wrapped up tight so you cant see anything (although I really wanted to.) But I walked over to her, and shes still out. But I just kept thinking over and over, "OMG what if she wakes up in severe pain and there is nothing I can do to help her?". The longer I stood by her bed, the weirder I felt. It started feeling like everyone's voices were far away. I started to feel clammy and hot. I almost felt the blood draining from my face, not sure where it was going lol. Anyway I was literally LITERALLY was seconds away from passing out. I just told my mom "Im going outside". She looked at me like I had two heads, because she knew I was on pins and needles waiting for the long surgery to be over. OK. Fast forward. Its time to go home. Im ok as long as I dont look at my daughter and think about how much pain she is going to be in tomorrow. If I do, I start getting that weird feeling again starting at the top of my head and traveling to my feet. finally, after I see that she is OK, and shes NOT in severe pain Im ok. Go figure. The first time I have to undress her arm (which looks a lot like frankenstien if you've never seen a big skin graft) I was FINE. No weird feeling. I even had to touch it, clean it, and dress it!

So with me getting ready to start the nursing program, am I going to be ok? I LOVE gross weird stuff, but I am worried that I may do the same thing as with my daughter. I SO care for others and REALLy really want to be a good nurse. Is it normal to feel faintish at first (if I do)? Or could it be a reaction that is just because its my family maybe? Im sure you have no way of knowing lol, I just wondered if anyone else has any experiences they might be willing to share. Im quite sure there have been many a student nurse get sick, I just dont wanna be one of em! :bluecry1:

Am I normal or am I weird? You can plead the fifth and not answer that if you so choose :chuckle

OH, and I forgot to mention, when I get that fainty feeling, my legs appear to be made of jello.....

I think it's normal to react that way when a family member is involved, you said it yourself, you were worried that she was going to be in pain. I'm like you, I have always liked medical stuff--I watched the doctors remove a cyst from my wrist when I was a teenager. However, my daughter was hit in the head when she was about 5, and once we got her to the emergency room and they were getting ready to stitch her head, I passed out. The doctors said it was just the overload of adrenaline and the shock. When I'm with patients, I'm able to be more objective. I watched a nurse do wound care on a particularly bad wound on one of my patients and didn't even feel a twinge of weakness.
