Has anyone worked for a Maximum Security Prison

Like san quinton or something?

how do nurses deal with those prisoners and what about safety issues?

I have worked for Union CI in Florida (death row) maximum security.Just deal with them as patients/people... expect respect from inmates..don't be "friendly" - strictly professional - insofar as security is concerned, they explain their procedures for the facility when you are "hired"/go to work... ie., in the vent of a riot - Florida DOC has a no nogotiation policy insofar as hostages... which translates to women faint and men pray... which means, women need to hit the floor and men need to be on their knees, literally, because when the riot squad comes in - they are coming in armed to the teeth with lethal weapons and are under orders to:shoot to kill, and are under directive to shoot ANYONE standing!

Hope this helps!

i am a nursing student, but work as a rmt at ny largest correctional facilities and perhaps the biggest in the nation. i love my job and the interaction i have with the patients and the staff. in terms of security you have plenty of that, correctional staff is always available to back you up 100% more so than your own nursing management. in terms of the patients/inmates they behave in your presence, they scare for what is happening to them, stress out, so when you assist them with compassion and dignity they appreciate that because everyone else there would treat them like crap. once in a while you may find one or two who want to try your nerves usually teenagers but once you speak to them they mellow out and even cry and thank you for the "talk" one rule of mine, i don't want to know why they are in for because i want to be non-judgmental, since we all have our own value system. i want to serve the patient/client/inmate in front of me and not feel guilty for their victims or whatever wrongdoing they committed, but sometimes you are taking care of a patient/inmate that you saw in the news the night before so you need to be able to be prepare to deal with that.

I work at a prison that houses mininium security to maxium security or AD-Seg. When we go to Ad-Seg we do not have any contact with inmates without at least one officer. If the inmates come to medical there are at least two officers and the inmate is in cuffs, belly chain and leg shackles.

Hi There, I work for a high, medium and low secruity women's prison in South Australia. I'm interested to talk to people about what the differences may be in American prisons to Australia. I have also worked in a maxium secruity remand centre for men. I have been a correctional nurse for the past 7 1/2 years, I 'm also a trained mental health nurse
