Had to quit nursing school due to illness...I am broken hearted.

Hi all! I am in my early thirties, single, and live with my parents...that alone makes me feel stuck. I have to work at least 32 hours a week to keep my health insurance.

I am in my 1st semester of my ADN program, due too many student loans already.

It has taken me so long to get here already, with my on going illness. The only good thing I got out of this was realizing that this is what I want to do, based on my semester so far and clinicals.

I have been ill for several years, I expect I will get better to an extent. The trouble is I can't work many hours and still do school. Even though I live at home my bills are really from previous medical bills. Now I have to reapply for the fall all over again.

I am really become so drained, I have stayed positive for years, but how long can I hang in? I want to finish school and have a family, I am single now, and the earliest I see me with getting my life together, and being stable enough in life to have a baby would be 40ish.

I have a bachelors degree already and my dream is to be in labor in delivery, or to bring a midwife.

If your health imposes physical restrictions upon you, will you be able to fulfill the requirements of clinical practice? Is this realistic? If not, perhaps you can transition to a different clinical profession program that is not as demanding. It would be a shame to continue to invest your time, energy and money into a effort that will not end successfully.

I agree. How can you expect to give care if you don't feel healthy yourself? How is your attendance going to be? Your patients and coworkers rely on you.

How much previous medical debt do you have? (If over $10k, maybe bankruptcy?) Are you sure you will be well enough to do 4 straight semesters starting in the fall? If you aren't working, your health insurance is probably cheaper through the health exchange. Explore all of your options, make a solid, detailed plan, and stick to it (even if it doesn't include nursing). Good luck!

I had to take a break from the semester in the fall as well. Make sure you're getting 7-8 hours of sleep at least during the week for clinicals and classes if you're on antibiotics. I'm in a much more understanding cohort now. Everyone at school has been commenting on my progress unlike last semester where I felt like a zombie (and looked like one too). When you go back you just have to be giving it 110% when you go back.

Some ideas as far as the debt goes. If it is due to school and its federal talk to them and get setup for IBR(income based repayment). If it is due to medical bills call them and hammer out a payment plan and tell them you are struggling. They may reduce the bill, help you with a payment plan, or write it off as charity care.

I would talk to school see if they have student insurance and how much it would cost. I had to buy school coverage because I wasn't covered by my parents (too old), but didn't have the time to work. PCT positions and NA postions are common for the nursing students to pick up in my area and give experience plus the added bonus of pay above min wage.

I wish you the best of luck!
