H1B Visa for New Graduate?

Published

Hello-

I am an international student on F-1 visa, currently pursuing my BSN as a second-degree. Coming near to graduation date in May 2012, I am very excited of the prospects of transitioning to becoming an RN. However, with the current nursing market, I might have a disadvantage during my job search process. Does anybody know of employers (anywhere in the U.S.) that provide sponsorship (visa/green card) for new graduate nurses? Thank you.

Unfortunately for you, it is not a matter of finding an employer willing to sponsor you for an H1B Visa, rather, it is the fact that as a new grad with no professional nursing experience yet under your belt, you do not qualify for an H1B Visa because only nurses with specialized skills and experience get approved for this visa.

Hi juan,

can u pls let me know of ways to acquire these specialized skills or professional nursing experience. is it by masters in nursing ?

thanks.

Having a master's degree may help your chances. In that case, you do need to find an employer with a position opening that clearly describes the specialized nature of the job responsibilities and that your education at the master's degree level is suited for such a specialized role. There are conditions the employer must meet in order to be allowed to sponsor a foreign employee. The immigration service will scutinize each and every application for H1B Visa and approves on a case to case basis. Traditionally, nurses have not been as lucky with approvals on this type of visa simply because the vast majority of open positions do not require more than the equivalent of a US associate's degree in nursing.

go straight to masters degree Family Nurse Practitioner you'll have a lot more possibility of getting hired with H1b even without experience... especially at the medically underserved areas. :)
