Gwynedd Mercy Fall 2013

Published

I was accepted for the fall semester & have yet to send in my deposit. I would love to hear from some current or past students regarding their experience there. I received a letter explaining which classes I've already taken can be applied there, yet I've read some postings where they don't accept credits & you have to repeat everything there. Is this true? I already have an Associates degree & all but 1 general class finished. I don't want to have to start from scratch. If that's the case I'll keep trying to get accepted elsewhere. Thanks!

No problem. I can send you the list of books if you want. GMC actually did two bundles of the books at discounted prices if you bought them all at once but you can still look and see about getting them elsewhere. It seems they do require you to have the codes and online access for a lot of things though so you may not want to buy them used.

I want to say holy crap I just got my username and passcode and seen all the books we need..it is crazy

Yeahs its pretty typical of a nursing program. I spent roughly the same amount on books for CCP's program and wasn't able to return any of them. And of course GMC doesn't use any of the same books as CCP so I had to spend another $1000 which sucked. You will be using the books for two years though so just remember you won't be buying books for nursing again unless its for one specific area that isn't discussed in the regular texts books.. for example maternity or something like that.

once again you are so helpful. Do you know if all that crap that we have to download to are handheld devices is included in the book bundle or is that separet ?

Hey everyone! My name is Amanda and I too will be starting this fall! I'm so excited! Has anyone decided which shoes they will be wearing for clinicals?

Im just going to get a pair of white sneakers no name brand

Amanda Im excited too, Im working on paying for my book. so much money

its a separate bundle that cost almost $200..totally insane but i accounted for that in the approx $1000 i told u about previously. :)

I bought a pair of Dansko's for my CCP program but I don't think we are allowed to wear those at GMC so Im probably just gonna get a plain white pair of sketchers or something of the sort.

I'm finally getting my second Varicella vaccine today and that will conclude all of my immunizations and all that jazz. I can finally send in my health paperwork and then I am officially done getting everything I need. :)

I just graduated the asn portion at gmc and starting the bsn portion this fall. The asn portion is tough. One semester we started 1st day being 15chapters behind (they had not supplied a reading list ahead of time), in fact at the end most of us students found the classes so fast paced that we often could not read all the material. That being said if you can live & breathe nursing you can do very well, the lectures have 90% or more of what you need. (I managed to keep a pretty high gpa & pass the nclex with 75 questions and i'm not the brightest star in the sky) The advanced physiology classes weren't tough, I thought the a&p classes at montco with Al Bacari were far tougher. gmc does have some classes it requires that you cannot get elsewhere so even if all your classes transfer you will still have a couple you have to do. i'm a little nervous about the bsn portion as I have to get a job but I did hear it was not as crazy demanding as the asn portion.

Oh & You can wear any white shoe as long as it has a back to it, I had dansko slip ons & they were fine. some instructors are very particular, wear white socks!! one student got into trouble for wearing her lucky striped socks, Lol!! Also most clinical instructors do not ever want to hear “I don’t know” if you don’t know say “I will look that up” or something to that effect, and always always always be prepared and on time to clinicals, if you are late some instructors have been said to hold it against you for the rest of the semester, if you are nervous, anxious or unsure about anything in your clinical setting you would do well to mention in up front (even during your last year), if you tell them they will help you but if you try to fly by the seat of your pants some instructors get cranky about it

Also - I have scrubs (I have to by blue for the bsn portion) 2 large tops, 2 med bottoms & 2 large bottoms, free to the needy, lol. I need my jackets though, sorry. you can e-mail me at [email protected]

Thanks for the info Juliemsoltis. I did one semester at CCP for Nursing and they did the same thing with the reading list so we were always behind. You realize after a few weeks the information you really need to know versus the 300 pages a week you are told to read. That being said since they gave us the reading list for GMC already I'm trying to read ahead and at least have week one possibly two done before we start in a few weeks.

FYI my friend graduated from GMC as well and went on to their BSN program. She said it was WAY easier than the ASN portion. She said they wrote a lot of papers but it was nothing compared to what the first two years were. She said she only had to go into class one day a week. I guess you can do a lot of it online if you need to.

Question: For the NCLEX how and what did you study? How long after graduation did you take the exam? A friend of mine said to give yourself a weeks break after graduation and do nothing, then study for a week straight, then go take it. I thought that was a good philosophy. Don't wanna wait too long.. I feel like I would start to forget some things we learned.
