Gwinnett Technical College (Gwinnett Tech) Fall 2024

Published

Wondering if anybody is or will be applying to Gwinnett Tech's Fall 2024 nursing program?

To piggyback off of the previous comment, take some time to review basic dosage calculations, become familiar with ALL formulas (formula method, ratio method, dimensional analysis- are the ones in the book), and find one that works for you. Dimensional analysis is popular and preferred by most students. We had an instructor who wanted things done her way or no way. I don't want to scare anyone because not everyone is like that and we have some pretty nice instructors overall, it's just best to be prepared for whatever. Also, memorize those conversions! You WILL see them. Your quiz will be given mid-semester or maybe earlier depending on the new instructor. With knowing how to complete the basic dosage math problems you will be ready to focus your time on the more complex ones that you will learn in class.

Your first clinical will be fundamentals. Review some basic nursing skills on YouTube if you are not a CNA or PCT in the hospital. You will primarily work with the PCT on the floor. You'll also get a lot of practice with head-toe assessments at clinical. There are some good videos for that on YouTube to review now. Med passes will be later in the semester; the opportunity to pass meds also depends on the nurse you will be working with. Overall, you'll get to do ALOT more 2nd semester. 1st semester is all about understanding the basics and shadowing.

I agree. All you need is a stethoscope. You will be provided a penlight, blood pressure cuff, and kits for the lab. I do not recommend purchasing textbooks early. It's best to wait until orientation in August. All textbooks are digital because of the homework component. If you know for a fact you'll need a hard copy I recommend searching for used ones on Amazon. For uniforms, you will receive a link to the vendor's website in a couple of months. Outside of the vendor, you'll have to buy your scrub pants and white shoes.. underscrub tops/compression socks if you need them. For the scrub pants, it may be better to buy a top/bottom set because you will be wearing plain scrubs to the lab. We wore black, but I would wait until an official email is sent out about uniform requirements. They change the colors sometimes.

Take a deep breath! It will seem overwhelming at times but you'll get to the end! I am 65 days away from pinning and when I look back, it happened so fast!

Class is every Tuesday and you will have lab most likely on Wednesday or Thursday and clinical will be a different day.

Make sure you are reading every day to really understand the material. Pharm is a lot so definitely give yourself time. Don't try to cram a couple of days before the test. That will not work.

Don't spend too much money on supplies and resources. You will get a lab bag and should only have to purchase a stethoscope. Unless you know for absolute sure you are going into cardiology, don't go crazy on buying an expensive one.

Everyone is selling study guides, and flash cards, and badge cards etc...don't go crazy trying to buy everything. School is expensive enough. Find a many free resources online as possible...concept map templates, lecture videos, etc...

Nexus Nursing has pharm videos and she teaches out of our textbook and there are also videos on maternity/peds when you get to your senior year

Find a good study partner. You will need them to quiz you, dry your tears, and talk you off the ledge when you want to drop out!

That's all I can think of for now but feel free to ask any questions.

Is lecture every Tuesday for every cohart or does it change ?

Are the campus classes all day? Just trying to figure out my work schedule

Yeah, it will be from 9-4 the first year and 9-3 the second year of they keep it the same. Lab for us was only the first year, and it was either morning 9-11 or afternoon 1-3 on Wednesday or Thursday.

Clinical is one day a week. The schedule says 7-7 but we never stayed there that long. It really depends on your instructor. But it was about 6:45-3/4pm. You don't get to pick your location but if you find someone to switch with, it shouldn't be a problem.

Hello, future nursing students!

Congratulations to everyone! I believe I was also accepted based on an email I received and my major changing to nursing. To any of the current or past cohorts that attended GTC, were you or people in your cohort able to work part-time based on the 1st-semester student workload? This program is a little longer than Lanier Tech due to no Summer semester but that might be a benefit for break/ working purposes. It's just not a lot of information/ forums out about lanier techs program.

My official acceptance letter just came to email! I'm so excited. Congratulations and good luck to everyone still waiting ?

I got mine too! Will you be attending GTC or are you waiting for other schools?

Congratulations everyone!! I found this thread a little late, but I got in too. Someone should create a facebook group so we can keep in touch and ask questions.
