Ok. I have moved around a lot and this summer I will be transfering to my third community college.
The courses I have already taken are: Biology, Business 101, EN101, Western Civ, Psychology, Sociology, Art Appreciation, College Algebra, and Speech.
My original major was marketing (the 4 year degree). I decided that it wasn't for me and after working at an ER I decided I wanted to be a nurse.
Well I OBVIOUSLY know that Business 101 will not transfer or help with my ADN. As most of you know most schools require a humanities for an ADN. Well ALL of the schools I have went to have said that history is a humanities and I have taken Western Civ. This school I am transfering to doesn't accept history as a humanities. Well I thought to myself it's ok I'll just take another class b/c I will need history for my BSN anyways.
I really want to get into the spring program b/c I have a daughter and the spring program is a weekend night course so then I will have a free babysitter (grandparents hehe). But the fall one is a day course ie 5am! So I thought the classes I would need still were A&P1 and 2, Micro, Human Growth, and Humanities. That all has to be finished by fall. No problem I will take A&P1 this summer and the rest in the fall. So yesterday I meed my councelor and I find out that EN101 at the school I went to is considered EN 50 by state standards! So now I have to take english again!:angryfire
I can't believe that the previous school didn't tell me that the english didn't transfer. And if their EN101 is not considered EN101 by the state then they need to call it EN 50! So now I am going to take 2 summer courses and take all the other courses in fall. This is going to be so hard b/c the 2 summer sessions at this school aren't split THEY OVERLAP! So for 3 weeks I will be taking almost the max load this summer. I know I can do it it's just going to be very difficult and it irritates me b/c that school was not upfront about their English class. It was a community college and for the Marketing degree I would have transfered and they would have not accepted that. Not to mention that my transcript is going to look funny now b/c after I take English again it will have EN101 on there twice both with A's!
So it looks like it's crunch time. It's irritating that I need to retake my English and Humanities. 3 courses that don't count. *cry* I just needed to vent and good luck to anyone else who has to crunch courses to get in the program.

Is there any way you can CLEP those classes??? I'd look into it at collegeboard.com, and also at your college and see if they accept the CLEP's for English and Humanites. That way you can just go in, pay 50 dollars, take the test, and get the credit. I'm doing that with Human Growth and Development, and Intro to Psychology. I know they have Humanities and English comp CLEP test too. Make sure your college accepts it though first.
My two cents. My older brother introduced me to the world of CLEP tests. I haven't taken one yet, but he takes them all the time and loves them.
I have heard of CLEP tests but I am worried that I might fail one. How do you know what to study?
Also do they actually grade it like a college level course. B/c the grades I make on these classes go towards the points to get into the nursing program.
If you fail one it doesn't make a difference. You don't get penalized. You just don't get the credit, have to wait six months to re-take it, and lose your 55 dollars (barely anything compared to the class price). Collegeboard has special studyguides for them that cover EVERYTHING, and have lots of practice problems. My brother said so many of them were really easy though, and he didn't even have to study (he is rather smart though... ). I did read on the collegeboard website that colleges may not accept CLEP tests for classes you've already taken. But, it's not like you failed the class. I'd go ask an advisor or something, and see what they say. The Humanities one shouldn't be a problem though.
Oops... edit to answer your other question...
Your college has a pass number, the number that you have to get on the test to pass it. You either pass, or fail. It's not a "grade." You get the credit, but I don't think it affects the GPA at all... You may want to call collegeboard about that... I'm not sure exactly about that part of it.
This is what my college says about it:
PA will be determined on only the non-clinical credit courses required by the ADN Program. Transfer courses will be included. Transfer credit earned without a letter grade (CLEP, AP, military evaluation, Challenge examination) will not be assigned quality points or calculated in the GPA.
That means I can't do it b/c everyone who gets in the program has max points. (There are only 32 seats for spring) Thank you so much for showing me that site though. I browsed through it and there are some classes I can Clep for my BSN.
Hmmm... bummer. Well, glad you can use the CLEP's someplace else!
Hope your "crunch time" goes well... I'm crunching biology and high school this year, and I'm sure hoping everything will go well! Thankfully I'm homeschooled so I can finish high school twice as fast this year. I'm dual-enrolled (HS and college) this semester (and hopefully won't be next!). Good luck!
