Graphing calculator for statistics?

I'm starting an Elementary Statistics online class next month and I'm getting what I need together. My instructor said that a graphing calculator would be helpful but not absolutely necessary and that I just need it to have certain statistics functions. My question is for those who have been through elementary statistics: how helpful was a graphing calculator if you had one? If you didn't get a graphing calculator did you struggle with anything or give in and get one? The calculator I'm looking at is Texas instruments and it's 20 bucks. Graphing calculators from TI on the other hand are upwards of $100...

I don't know how detailed Elementary Stats is, but I definitely needed a graphing calculator for my AP Stats class in high school.

My stats instructor said we could use one at home, but we were NOT allowed to use graphing calculators on any quizzes or exams. I chose to not use one (no sense in learning everything on a calculator you can't use on the exam) and did fine with a basic $20 scientific calculator.

That makes sense!

I would think it would be better to not use a graphing calculator so you really understand what to do for each test instead of using a statistics function. That's what I did for my stats class.
