I am a big fan of univeral healthcare. HOWEVER, I feel that our new president will need to focus on fixing our deficit first before figuring out how to pay for something so huge. Also, I know that a lot of people are against government involvement. Including me I hate the seatbelt law hehehe.
So what if our government got involved in a much smaller way to start out with? What if all they did was make a law (or whatever, lol, never got into American Govt in high school) that says that all health insurance companies, all pharmaceutical companies, and all medical equipment manufacturer companies be NOT FOR PROFIT?
I think now please correct me if I'm wrong but France's healthcare system includes private insurance companies but those companies are not like our private companies. They are not for profit but they are considered private because they are not government run.
Feedback please!

even not for profits must make money. They cannot continue to operate at aloss or even abreak even point. They would never be able to expand services and would soon be forced to close their doors. Also it is against the American way of thought to go into a buisness where you will not make money. If I cannot make any money at a business, then why should I go into it?
Oh I think the owner/s and employees should be well compensated but i was thinking more along the lines of not being on the stock market so you arent focused on increasing your revenues year after year so stock holders are seeing their share values rise year after year.
I understand that all people want to make money when they go into business but as far as healthcare is concerned they should also want to help people. If they arent in business for that too then they shouldnt be in doing business in the healthcare field. That's just my opinion of course! :)
Well I posted the first two comments before I watched this video!

on the page click on the SICK AROUND THE WORLD link on the right. From there you can watch a piece on healthcare in 5 countries. Switzerland is the best! I feel it has a little something for both people that want universal healthcare and people that dont want government involvement, and want people to be responsible for themselves.
They made all of their insurance companies go PRIVATE! Negotiated with pharmaceutical companies and etc. It seems to work so far! Also no insurance company can turn anyone down!
They switched from a system like ours in just 1994!

I did a research paper on Socialized Medicine in grad school. France, Switzerland, and a number of other countries have socialized medicine. The "insurance companies" are actually subsidized by the government - the are monitored, but not run by the government. Problem here is that the US has a strong "for profit" mentality. We would have not made the medical advances we have without the possibility of profit for the company involved.
Well insurance companies never gave us any great medical advances.
