Graduation rates

Is anyone else looking at graduation rates for their nursing program? Is that something I should be concerned about with an accredited school?

Yes it is something to worry about because, I feel, that there is a direct correlation between graduation rates and knowledge/skill on the job. The school I attended had a poor rate and there are a few hospitals in the valley that will not hire us due to previous students that didn't work out. GO WITH A PROGRAM THAT HAS A GOOD GRADUATION RATE AND A GOOD REPUTATION!!

Thanks! I appreciate the response. I was accepted to Chamberlain's program and saw that they had a low graduation rate. This concerns me... I know they are knew to Phoenix, but I really hope that hospitals will hire nurses from Chamberlain.

I take it you will not share what school you went to? :wink2:

I wonder what programs are the good ones and which ones have the best reputation.

I went to IIA and just graduated. Right now from my class, 12 have taken the NCLEX and 10 have passed; that puts us around 83%. My school has a bad reputation; however there are some real good people from my school out there working that are proving it wrong.

IIA changed their name to Brookline College and hired a new dean of nursing. The first thing this lady did was fire some instructors and shut down admissions for the next 9 months until they can get the right curriculm and instructors in place. This lady is a fire breathing dragon and will make it one of the best schools in AZ. I believe that she will make it a great school and if I had to do it over again, I would be tempted to go there.

Call the student nurse education coordinator for some of the hospitals and ask them what they think.

Also, most job listing are saying BSN preferred; you might want to consider a 4 year school...........

Good luck & stay groovy

That is a good idea to talk to a student nurse education coordinator. Hopefully, they are willing to answer questions.

And yes, the program I'm getting into is a BSN program, so I would have my bachelor's in 3 years.

It is all in how you approach them. They usually won't trash any schools.

I would go about it by explaining that you want to go to a good nursing school so you can get the very best education and "Is there a particular school that you would recommend?". After you loosen them up a little ask them if there are any new grads that their facility won't hire due to the school that they attended.

It is not the graduation rate you should be primarily concerned with. The NCLEX pass rate is the bigger issue. Although, generally, there is a direct correlation between the two. Click HERE for AZ NCLEX pass rates.

Thank you for the list. Chamberlain College of Nursing is not on there though. Probably because they are new to the valley and do not have a graduating class yet. I guess that is a risk that I would take going there since they have not even developed a reputation in Phoenix yet. It seems like a good school..and seems to be doing well in other states.
