Graduating tomorrow....Next up, boards!

Specializes in Nurse Practitioner-Emergency Room.

Hey everybody. It's been a long time since I've been on here. I got on to announce that tomorrow morning, I'll be walking across stage to receive my MSN with the family nurse practitioner concentration! I was an ER nurse for 5 years. I started the FNP program at one school part time, and during the second semester my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. It was a rough time, so I withdrew. I had A's in the program, but when I reapplied for the next year, they didn't let me in (despite good GRE scores, a good GPA and great progress in the program up until that point). As a result, I applied to another program, and decided I'd go full time to finish in 18 months. It wasn't easy, but a year and a half later, and with my mother continuing to battle cancer, (she's actually in the hospital right now recovering from a pleurodesis procedure) I'm finally finished. I really enjoy the nurse practitioner role. I liked working as an ER nurse, but after five years, I was ready for more autonomy. I highly recommend becoming a family nurse practitioner for those in the nursing profession that want to make more decisions, and like to investigate a patient's clinical picture in order to develop a diagnosis and plan of care. I must say that I thoroughly enjoyed all of my clinical experiences (much more than nursing school) and I'm so ready to be the best nurse practitioner that I can be. For anyone else graduating with their master's degree this December! Congratulations! I know for me, it's a wonderful feeling, and I can't help but feel blessed and be thankful that I've had the opportunity to be a nurse, and now to follow my dream of becoming an FNP. I knew from the first semester of nursing school when I found out what an FNP was, that was what I wanted to be. Next up, certification boards! I think I'm going to go with the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners Certification Exam. Well, I'm going back to Fitzgerald. Hope everyone has a great weekend.

Congrats! Best wishes to you and your mum! I'm going to start FNP online programa at University of South Alabama this spring. Where did you get your NP education? Would you please share some your experience as a FNP student? Muchas Gracias!

Specializes in allergy and asthma, urgent care.

Congrats on your graduation and best of luck to your mother. My mother was diagnosed with lung cancer in my last semester of NP school. I think that made me work harder, cause I knew how much she wanted me to do well and finish, even though it was tough to keep my mind on my studies. Fortunately, she's doing great and I'm thoroughly enjoying my new career as an NP. Good luck on the boards!!!

Hey guys! Having this degree after all these years feels really good. Thanks for all the prayers and thoughts for my mother. To answer someone's question, I went to Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate, TN. They have one of the newest DO schools in the country. Our classes are all in the new medical building, so we got to share resources with the DO and PA students. Because everything is so new, we were able to use their up to date simulation dummies and clinic. It was a great experience, and although the FNP program there is fairly new, I would recommend it. They also have a anesthesia program, and are just now starting a psych NP program. It's a good school, and for anyone in Tennessee or surrounding states, I'd highly recommend the FNP program and for anyone considering a career as a CRNA I'd also recommend looking into it. Any tips from anyone regarding practice would be greatly appreciated.
