Hi. Just recently accepted to University of South Alabama MSN program online. Just curious if anyone is currently in this program and how do you feel about being a full time student( 9 semester grad hours) and working 36 hrs. ( 12 hour days) a week vs 24 hrs. (12 hour days) a week. Adv. Pharm, Nurs Theor and Adv Nursing Leadership,Roles are the first three classes in my sequence. Is this too much to take? I am very disciplined to do the work but I do have 3 kids, single parent. I am on a very tight schedule because I want to graduate in 4 semesters as projected, however I want to be successful. I don't want to set myself up for a hard time. Is this too much? Or should I take more loan money for housing? I currently work pool at my hospital, but was considering on switching to full time to get the tuition reinbursement from my hospital. Is this crazy? I am currently taking a chem course part 1 and want to take chem part 2 online at my current college to complete my refresher courses for nurse anesthesia school and I thought the chem will help me with my adv. pharmocology? Help all suggestions :idea:welcomed. ThankYou.

Hi cmmg! Cingratulations to you! I just found out that I got accepted to USA for the FNP spring admit online program! I did apply to start in spring 2008, but right before I mailed the application, I decided that the summer start curriculum might be a better fit for me and my busy lifestyle. I mailed it anyway just to see what would happen. I emailed with one of the college of nursing staff today and she said I could roll over to the summer curriculum. Are there alternate curriculum plans for Nurse Anesthesia?

Good luck to you!

Hi! 92mxmom and congratulations to you as well. I am also kinda considering South University since they have recently recieved their CCNE accreditation. I called CCNE myself and they told me. Anyway, what do you mean are there alternate curriculum plans for nurse anesthesia?

What I am referring to is there are different curriculum plans depending on what semester you start. I orginally wanted to start this spring. Starting in the spring, one would complete the track in 6 semesters. Summer start is over 8 semesters. I think fall was 7. I am leaning towards a summer start because I work 2 jobs right now, am a newlywed and we are thinking of trying for a baby soon. So...a summer start would keep the course load per semester down.

What track are you interested in?

I am doing the CNS track starting in Spring 08 which is 4 semesters long. I was told by one of my other friends who was enrolled at USA that you can start out fulltime and if you need to switch to parttime, you can. My projected graduation date would be May 2009. I want to finish in the shortest time possible, however I want to do so while maintaining a 4.0 GPA. If I need to rely more on student loans so as to cut my work schedule down in order to finish on time, thats what I will do. But if figure, while my kids are in school from 8-3p, then I will do my school work within this timeframe. I am very excited to start grad school. I will way my options very carefully concerning the 2 school, however I am strongly leaning toward USA.

Sorry about the nurse anesthesia thing. I'm not sure where I got that from...

Anyways, I looked into a CNS program in VA but decided it was not the route for me as it seems we don't use them much in my locality. I really want to teach and also looked into nurse educator programs but felt that since my only hosptial experience is in the ED part-time (I work FT in a surgeons office), I think doing an FNP program will give me a better knowledge base to teach, and provide more job opportunities.

Anyways, I have a friend who lives in Mobile near USA and she states the school has a good reputation. And...bonus...for distance ed you get in-state tuition rates, which happen to be cheaper than the schools I looked into in my home state (VA). I was astounded at the tuition at some schools---upwards of $700 per credit hour??? Who can afford that on a nurses salary?

So have you actually received your acceptance letter? I found out I was accepted when I emailed with a question about my application, but I have not gotten my letter yet. Do they provide you with information on what the next steps are?

Thanks!

Yes I have received my acceptance letter. In the envelope are 2 forms, one for a criminal background check and one for a urine drug screen. The both cost $80 and you pay that out of pocket. They actually work pretty quick because I have already been awarded money for tuition and I have been approved and even know the disbursement date. Registration is the17th of Dec for newly accepted grads.

The in-state tuition is a bonus. Yes, you are right, all the other schools that I have checked out cost much more. You know, I thought about FNP just in case things do not work out with CRNA school due to my parental demands. I will have to wait and see how things go. You know, if you want to teach, there are a lot of grants for nursing educators. South Alabama has some info on their nursing website. Check it out. Well, possibly we may have some classes together, even if you start in the summer. Oh yeah, congrats on being a newly wed.

CMMG, I know this is a little late being that it is 2008. Just wanted to know how the FNP course is going. I am planning on applying for the Spring 09 semester. Can you give me any comments or insights about the program? I too at one time was planning on applying for CRNA school, but is deciding against it. Are you from the GA area? If so, that's where I am from.
