Graduate RN moving to NC

Hi! I recently found out I got a job in the MICU at DUMC and I'm WAY excited! I graduate in august so I will be starting in September (praying I pass my boards) anyway, I am relocating from WV and I dont know too much about the area, the hospital, or anything. I just wonder if anyone can give me some tips for moving to Durham, some great places to eat, where to have a cold beer, how to get involved in some research projects there, etc. Any info would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Specializes in MICU & SICU.

Not sure where you are looking to live but I would suggest that you don't live around Duke considering the crime rates. I would suggest living near the mall (Southpoint mall) near I-40.

Lots of places to eat around that same area near the mall as well as Chapel Hill Blvd.

Best local place to get a beer, search for the City Beverage in Durham, lots of good choices on tap.

Specializes in ER, Teaching, HH, CM, QC, OB, LTC.

You may also want to try the southern end of Granville County. Not a bad drive to DUKE but cheaper housing. We have good food & watering holes here too!!

Good Luck on your boards!

The Southpoint area is nice but is getting pricey. Norhtern Durham is booming and you can still find nice and affordable spots there. Tons of new communities in east Durham that are awesome to live in: Grove Park, Brightleaf, brightwood Trails, Ravenstone, Stone Hill, etc... Easily find a beautiful home at or below $200,000, a dream in most growing cities. I moved here last yr so it's still fresh to me. PM me if you'd like. I LOVE IT HERE! And people swore I wouldn't coming from NYC. :-)

Hi!

Glad to find someone that moved to NC from NYC... I graduated from BMCC this year and will be moving there in the beginning of next year (not durhan but pinehurst). It's great to hear you love it there, I am so excited and I think I will be fine with visiting NYC a couple of times a year..it's time for some relaxation! Shoot me a line if you'd like to chat
